Sandwich girls soccer makes a statement with another Nauset win
Recapping Friday's Cape Cod and Islands high school sports action.
Sandwich (10-2-0) completed the season sweep of Nauset (8-2-2) with a 3-1 victory on Friday in a Cape and Islands League Atlantic Division girls soccer matchup between two of the top teams in the region.
Lauren Meyer scored on either side of a goal by Gwen Reisig, including a free kick from the edge of the box.
Nauset failed to capitalize on some great early opportunities in the first half that would've given the Warriors the lead. Sandwich instead powered in front when Meyer scored on a long-range effort.
Reisig then made it 2-0 after sniffing out a second-chance ball on a corner kick following the restart.
Eloise MacMillan recorded Nauset's only goal after she was played in on goal by Caroline Bothfeld to pull within 2-1. She twisted and turned her way free of the last defender and slotted the ball into the bottom corner.
Meyer restored Sandwich's two-goal lead with 15 minutes to play when she turned in a free kick that went over the goalkeeper's head.
Nauset had strong play from Emi Valli, Chloe Burns and Bothfeld in the midfield, as well as from Evelyn Vaillancourt and Talia Nadeau on the wings.
