New coach, new players, new all-around attitude with high expectations. Kentucky wants to turn things around fast, and it starts against Youngstown State.

· 438 words

Kentucky has been the working definition of an also-ran over the last several years, and it's up to new head coach Will Stein to change that. The former Oregon offensive coordinator cranked up the transfer portal, brought in a slew of good weapons, and now the Wildcats are about to look far different. It starts against a Youngstown State team with a terrific ground game and with a win under its belt.

Kentucky vs Youngstown State: Quick Hits

Youngstown State ran all over Mercyhurst with a 43-10 win. It's a dangerous team that will push the UK defense.

Kentucky will likely start eight transfers on offense, including Notre Dame transfer quarterback Kenny Minchey.

The Wildcats have won five straight season openers and eight of the last nine.

How To Watch Kentucky vs Youngstown State

Date: Saturday, September 5, 2026 Game Time: 1:00 pm ET TV: SEC Network Location: Kroger Field, Lexington, KY – CFN Week 1 Schedule, Predictions

The running game is dangerous. Great throughout last year, the Penguins started this season averaging seven yards per carry with over 250 yards rolled up on Mercyhurst. They have a deep backfield, but quarterback Beau Brungard is the one who makes it all go. He's a do-it-all playmaker who gets to deal with a questionable Kentucky defensive front. The Wildcats are 0-10 over the last two years when allowing 145 rushing yards or more. Youngstown State averaged 202 per game last season.

The offense will work right away. Youngstown State will be plucky, and it has a decent enough defensive front to bother Minchey, but the Cats will look different. They'll be faster, more balanced, and with the explosion that's been missing over the last several seasons. And yes, the defensive front is getting some reworking, but helped by the addition of Hasaan Sykes (Western Carolina) and Jordan Castell (Florida), the secondary is loaded.

Kentucky vs Youngstown State Prediction, Betting Lines

This is a good matchup to get Kentucky rolling. Youngstown State will have its moments, but that's a good thing. The Wildcats will have to keep pushing and won't be able to put it on cruise control. There won't be any real drama, though, with the UK offense taking over in a terrific third quarter. Minchey will be great.
