North East wins weather-delayed Region 3 game at Girard
North East and Girard fans who waited out a 90-minute weather delay were rewarded with a competitive Region 3 opener won by the visiting Grapepickers.
GIRARD — Lightning delayed the opening kickoff for the Sept. 3 game between North East and Girard by 90 minutes.
The handfuls of fans who persevered it at Battles Memorial Field then watched a Region 3 opener worthy of such a wait.
Although North East never trailed thanks to a 22-0 lead after the first quarter, they withstood two comeback attempts by the host YellowJackets for a 32-28 victory.
Josh Banaag gave the Grapepickers (1-0, 1-1) their ultimate four-point advantage via his 34-yard field goal with 3 minutes, 48 seconds left in regulation.
North East then clinched its outcome when it defense stopped Girard (0-1, 1-1) on fourth down near midfield with 18 seconds left.
