Why Celtics Signed and Cut Former Division III Star

The Boston Celtics have made a roster decision.

The NBA's player transactions page shows that the Celtics waived guard Hank Morgan on Friday, Sept. 11.

It's unclear when Morgan signed a contract with the Celtics.

Why the Celtics signed and cut Hank Morgan

The Celtics signed Morgan to a training camp deal, according to HoopsHype . Waiving Morgan makes him eligible for a bonus of up to $91,000 if he plays for the Maine Celtics, the Boston Celtics ' G League affiliate.

The move gives Morgan an opportunity to continue his development with the Maine Celtics.

Morgan is a 6-5 guard from New Jersey who spent four years playing at Hamilton College, a Division III school. He averaged 21.8 points per game as a senior while shooting 38.1 percent from 3, and earned NESCAC Player of the Year honors.

Morgan spent last season in the G League, starting with the Utah Jazz's affiliate, the Salt Lake City Stars. The Stars waived him in January, and he eventually joined the Maine Celtics.

Morgan appeared in 17 games with the Maine Celtics, averaging 8.2 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 19.2 minutes per game. He shot 43.8 percent from 3-point range.

Morgan appeared in four games with the Celtics in Summer League.
