Jon Gruden Questions Steelers’ Offensive Line Chaos Amid Struggles: ‘Why?’

Jon Gruden has seen plenty of offensive lines during his coaching career; however, the Pittsburgh Steelers' current setup has left him genuinely puzzled. The former head coach watched the unit shuffle players between positions through the offseason and into the regular season, and now the results are becoming harder to ignore.

The Steelers entered the year hoping their offensive line would settle into a reliable group. Instead, the Steelers are still moving pieces around while quarterback Aaron Rodgers continues to take pressure behind them. After a rough Week 2 loss to the New England Patriots , Gruden has a simple question about the whole approach: Why keep changing it?

The Steelers have already dealt with plenty of changes up front this season. Zach Frazier is the only starter who remained at the same position from last year, while Troy Fautanu moved from right tackle to left tackle, and Mason McCormick switched from right guard to left guard.

Gruden addressed the situation w hile discussing the Steelers' Week 3 matchup with the Cincinnati Bengals . The constant movement stood out to him, especially with the Steelers already having trouble protecting Rodgers and opening holes in the running game.

"The offensive line has been one of the most incredible things that I've ever seen this year. There has been more movement on this offensive line than any line I've ever seen. They're all playing different positions this year. I'm like, 'Where the hell's my left tackle? Oh, he's at right tackle. Where's my right guard? Oh, he's over there.' A lot of mix-and-match going on, and I think that has a lot to do with the funk that they're in. I'm just here to wonder, why?"

Dylan Cook went from playing left tackle last season to starting at right tackle. Spencer Anderson , who had been a swing tackle, moved into the starting right guard spot. The changes were intended to create a new combination; however, the unit has struggled to find much consistency.

The Steelers gave up four sacks and seven QB hits in their 20-3 loss to the Patriots. Their running game hasn't offered much help either. The Patriots also exposed some of the communication problems that can arise when a group is still learning to play together. New England head coach Mike Vrabel used six-man pressures to create confusion, and Rodgers was hit hard as Pittsburgh failed to sort them out.

The Steelers had been hoping the line would grow into a strength, particularly after investing heavily in the position through the draft. Fautanu is a former first-round pick, while the organization has spent other premium draft capital on the unit in recent years.

Except the Steelers are heading into Week 3 with more questions than answers. The Bengals now become the next test , and the Steelers don't have much time to sort things out. If the line continues to struggle, the focus will naturally return to the decision to change so many positions in the first place.
