Shohei Ohtani’s Return to the Mound Imminent

The Los Angeles Dodgers ' Shohei Ohtani is one step closer to pitching in a live game. Manager Dave Roberts said today that Ohtani will throw to hitters or throw another bullpen session before possibly pitching Sunday in Detroit against the Tigers, according to Jack Harris of The California Post.

Ohtani has been limited to his designated hitter role for a month as he has dealt with a recurring knee injury. The sore knee, which has bothered him on and off over his career, kept him from participating in this year's All-Star Game. Baseball's unicorn received an injection of some sort during the Break. He was noticeably limping during his time on the field prior to the shot.

The Dodgers have been careful to manage the superstar's workload this season. Even giving him a night off from his DH duties now and again to minimize wear and tear. However, there is a little more than a month to go in the regular season; Los Angeles wants Ohtani to do his part on the mound during the postseason.

It is no secret that Ohtani posts prolific offensive numbers. Currently, he already has 30 home runs and is batting .288 with 80 RBI. It's easy to see why the Dodgers are reluctant to take his bat out of the lineup,

even to rehab his arm. Therefore, he will build up his longevity in Major-League action. His first outing, whether it be Sunday or the next homestand, will only be for one inning.

Los Angeles is hoping that by the time the postseason rolls around, the four-time Most Valuable Player will be able to go at least five innings. It is most likely that Ohtani will be a starting option in October. Los Angeles will not risk losing the DH during the most important games of the season.

Ohtani isn't the only arm on the mend. Tyler Glasnow returns to the mound tonight after missing more than three months with back issues. Glasnow had ace-like stuff before being sidelined. Catcher Will Smith begins a rehab assignment tonight as well. The Dodgers are getting some pieces back at just the right time. Hopefully, they stay healthy.
