Bills vs. Texans bold predictions for Week 1 of 2026 NFL season

The Buffalo Bills are at a crossroads. This is a team that has been to the playoffs for seven consecutive seasons, and they have fallen short of reaching the Super Bowl in each of them. Quarterback Josh Allen has been at the helm of their offense in each of those years, and while he is clearly a gifted athlete who plays with courage, skill and intelligence, every one of those season have ended in disappointment.

The Bills have made a dramatic change heading into the 2026 season. They have parted company with their head coach Sean McDermott, a man who had inspired the team and had earned much of the credit for the team's growth. Unfortunately, there were aspects to his leadership that led to some of the postseason failures and the Bills made the powerful and emotional move, and they hired Joe Brady to serve as the new head coach.

Brady had been the architect of Buffalo's explosive offense, and now he is in charge of the full operation. He brought in Jim Leonhard to straighten out the defense and veteran Pete Carmichael will serve as his offensive coordinator.

The coaching brain trust knows it has a quarterback in Allen who is ready to lead the team to a championship. He is 30 years old and still at the peak of his abilities. He has the arm strength, leadership, athletic ability and experience to get the job done.

It begins in Week 1 with a demanding road game against the Houston Texans . It is not a must game, as others will be described later in the season, but it is about setting a tone for the season.

Allen will be prepared to make an opening statement

Allen and the Bills will be competing against a formidable pass rush led by Danielle Hunter and Will Anderson . The Bills will be ready to make a statement, and Allen will lead the way.

He has a crew of wide receivers that is led by former Bear D.J. Moore and Khalil Shakir . Both have athletic ability, high-level skill and a desire to make the plays needed to win games. Moore helped take the Bears offense from the bottom of the league to respectability and then to great heights last year. He will give the Bills great leadership when the game is on the line.

Running back James Cook has explosive speed and is coming off a spectacular season in which he rushed for 1,621 yards, 12 touchdowns and a 5.2 yards per carry average.

The production of Moore and Cook will help Allen open the season with a bang. Look for the four-time Pro Bowler and 2024 MVP to throw for 325 yards, 2 touchdowns and run for another score.

Stroud will attempt to climb the QB ladder

Just as Allen faces the pressure of having to lead the Bills to a Super Bowl, Stroud is under a similar pressure to take the Texans deep into the playoffs.

There were rumors at the end of the season that the Texans would be looking to move Stroud after a poor performance in the playoff loss to the New England Patriots , but general manager Nick Caserio said those ideas were "moronic."

He was brilliant in 2023, his rookie season, but he has not been at that level since. Stroud completed 273 of 423 passes for 3,041 yards with 19 touchdowns and 8 interceptions last year. Those numbers don't compare to his rookie season in which he threw for 4,108 yards with a 23 to 5 TD to interception ratio.

Stroud does not have the skilled receivers that Allen has, but Nico Collins and former Patriot Kayshon Boutte are more than competent.

Former Lion David Montgomery will be the key to an improved running attack. The Texans acquired him in an offseason trade and immediately gave him a 2-year, $16.5 million contract extension. Montgomery has exceeded the 1,000-yard mark twice in his career, and he should be able to come close to that level with the Texans.

He needs to set the tone for Stroud and the offense with 80 rushing yards against the Bills. If he can do that, look for Stroud to throw for 250 yards and 2 touchdowns in the season opener.

Bills to outlast Texans with late defensive stand

The Bills and the Texans will be two of the strongest teams in the AFC, and they should be able to play one of the most notable games of the NFL's opening weekend.

However, since teams rarely play their starters in the preseason, the early games in the regular season are often rife with mistakes. The Bills will make their share and so will the Texans, but there is perhaps a bit more for the Bills to fight for because they have been so close to NFL glory so many times.

The Bills are switching to a 3-4 defense this year and that should fit right in with Greg Rousseau , who moves from edge rusher to stand-up outside linebacker. He led the team with 7.0 sacks last season, and he will make the key plays at the end of the game for n improved Buffalo defense.

The Bills will win the game by a 28-24 score.
