Eagles news: Why Nick Sirianni is sending OC to booth in Week 1 vs. Commanders

For the first time in five years, Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni is sending offensive coordinator Sean Mannion to the booth ahead of their Week 1 matchup against the Washington Commanders . The Eagles announced their final Week 1 injury report before Sunday's game, where Philadelphia's coaching staff will add a new wrinkle from its typical approach.

Sirianni explained the reasoning behind sending Mannion to the booth as oppose to typically standing besides him on the sideline, per NBC's Pro Football Talk.

"We want to think through every situation to make sure that we're giving ourselves the best opportunity for us to win the game and be at our best," Sirianni said. "Also understanding that there is no right way to do it or wrong way to do it. There's many different ways to do it. I think we can get caught up so much, it's like, 'This is the only way to do it.'

"You have conviction in what you believe, but there's many different things that can work and have worked. It's just about making the best decision, what's best for your football team and for you to do your job the best. That's how we went about it."

Nick Sirianni justifies Week 1 play-calling decision

Eagles offensive coordinator Sean Mannion reflected on moving to the booth after the preseason where head coach Nick Sirianni first experimented with having his offensive coordinator calling plays from the booth. Mannion reflected on the decision after the Eagles' last preseason game, per 94WIP's Eliot Shorr-Parks.

"Ultimately, I just felt like after doing both, it was the best decision for our staff for communication with our quarterbacks, and the best decision for our team," Sirianni said. "It was a very valuable experience and I think we're in a good place moving into the season."

The Eagles lost 30-13 to the Bengals in their preseason finale.
