Newcastle edge past Millwall to progress in Carabao Cup

Newcastle edged past Championship side Millwall with a 1-0 win in the third round of the EFL Cup .

Joe Willock 's late goal separated the sides, but Newcastle could have been behind moments earlier when Tairyk Arconte smashed an effort against the post.

Despite the late scare, Newcastle controlled the match and could have had more as Fabian Schar , Yoane Wissa and Harvey Barnes all missed big chances to make the result more comfortable.

Over the last three years, Newcastle have made the EFL Cup their favourite competition. Either side of winning it in 2025, they reached the semi-finals and the quarter-final stage.

Despite all the changes in the club over the summer, Newcastle, now led by Matthias Jaissle, have not changed their attitude to this tournament.

Willock created the first meaningful chance of the evening. The Englishman drove into the box on the left-hand side before firing a powerful effort on goal. Filip Marschall did well to save, but the Newcastle onslaught did not stop there.

Minutes later Schar's free header looped just over the bar from a corner, before Barnes tried his luck from range with a similar result.

Even though Newcastle were on top, Millwall did have chances. Midway through the first half, the Premier League side's defence was almost breached when Lyndon Dykes got on the end of a searching cross into the box. His inventive effort was comfortably saved, however.

Newcastle remained on top for the rest of the first half, but still failed to find the back of the net. Ramsey and Wissa both had good chances to at least test Marschall in the Millwall goal, but both efforts were wide of the mark.

After the break, Millwall looked like a completely changed outfit. Minutes after the restart, Jenson Metcalfe fired an effort over the bar and Millwall's chances did not end there.

Caleb Taylor's uncontested header five minutes later from a wide free kick sailed just wide of the post, but despite facing 14 shots from a strong Newcastle side in the first half, the south London team were showing they weren't just here to take part.

The response did not last long though, as Jaissle played his hand. Anthony Elanga and summer signing Matias Fernandez-Pardo were both introduced and a similar pattern resumed.

With ten minutes to go and penalties looming, Newcastle did have their breakthrough. Minutes after Arconte saw Millwall's golden chance to take the lead rattle the post, Willock scored the goal that looked like it had been coming all game.

Excellent play from Fernandez-Pardo and Lewis Hall on the left created space for the left back, who fired in a low cross for his compatriot to pass the ball home.
