Prado Grabs SMX Playoff Lead Heading Into The Final

Anything can happen with triple points available in the final

Jorge Prado will enter this weekend's 450SMX Playoff finally with the lead after taking the overall victory on the back of two runner-up finishes at Playoff 2. Prado's consistency gave him the slim edge over Ken Roczen and Hunter Lawrence, who each earned a moto win and a fourth-place finish. With double points on offer, that small edge added up to a real cushion in the championship chase heading into the Final.

The first 20-minute-plus-one-lap moto belonged to Roczen after a sustained duel with Prado. The Spaniard grabbed the holeshot and led early, trading fast laps with the Progressive Insurance Cycle Gear Suzuki rider before Roczen made an aggressive pass just before halfway and opened a gap of more than two seconds.

Prado clawed it back through lapped traffic and drew within a second on the final lap, but Roczen held on to win by 1.3 seconds. Haiden Deegan took a close third ahead of Lawrence and Cooper Webb.

Moto 2 was the wilder of the two. Lawrence launched his CRF450RWE to the holeshot, briefly ceded the lead to Prado, then reclaimed it and pulled clear, ultimately winning by 14.9 seconds.

Behind him the race for the overall descended into chaos with a four-way tie for the lead in play. Prado went down in the sand at the midpoint and remounted in fourth before charging back past Roczen for third.

An intense battle for second between Prado and Deegan ended when Deegan crashed in the sand. Deegan and Roczen then got tangled on the reentry, Webb slipped past both, and contact during a pass by Deegan put Webb on the ground. Second went to Prado, ahead of Deegan and Roczen.

Under Supermotocross' Olympic scoring system, Prado's 2-2 gave him the lead for the overall victory. Lawrence (4-1) and Roczen (1-4) finished level for second, but Lawrence's win in the second moto broke the tie in his favor. Two moto podiums (3-3) were not enough for Deegan, who came up just short of the box in fourth.

The double points swung the title picture in Prado's favor, moving him 16 points clear of Deegan and Lawrence, who share second. Roczen sits fourth, 18 points back, with Webb (5-5) another two points adrift in fifth.

With triple points up for grabs, anything can happen at the SMX Final, September 26 at Thunder Ridge Nature Arena in Ridgedale, Missouri.
