Philadelphia 76ers shooting guard preview: VJ Edgecombe, bench unit

The 2026-27 season is quickly approaching for the Philadelphia 76ers as they have their eyes on ending a long title drought after the big additions made in the offseason. The Sixers will field one of the more talented rosters in the league and will look to get to the mountaintop in 2027.

It's now time to look ahead to the new season and time to break down each position for the Sixers in an effort to preview what the season might look like. Sixers Wire will look at the shooting guards now and take a look at what the Sixers bring to the table at the position:

Edgecombe had one of the more impressive rookie seasons anybody will see for a player so young and surrounded by so many veterans. When a player is selected as high as Edgecombe was, at No. 3, that player is normally the foundational piece for a team to build around. In his situation, he joined a Sixers team with established stars and veterans as he looked to find a niche, and he was able to make a huge splash throughout the season and into the playoffs.

Edgecombe vowed when the season ended to work on his jumper. He did shoot a respectable 35.4% from deep in the regular season, but that number dropped to 29.2% in the playoffs. He has shot the ball well while playing for the Bahamas in the FIBA World Qualifiers and that is an encouraging sign for Philadelphia because if he becomes a knockdown shooter, then his game gets elevated to another level. He has been in the gym all summer and will look to bring that type of production to the Sixers in his second season.

The Sixers were able to snag 2-time champ Kentavious Caldwell-Pope in free agency after a year with the Memphis Grizzlies . The 13-year veteran is a reliable player who will likely shoot the ball better in Philadelphia than he did in Memphis (31.6% from deep). His shooting numbers have dropped a bit, but one has to believe him being in a winning situation like the Sixers will allow him to find his groove again.

Anfernee Simons will also see some time here as he brings his microwave scoring ability to the City of Brotherly Love. He can knock down shots from all over the court and has the ability to really light up a scoreboard. He's averaged over 20 points twice in his career. Two-way player Caleb Love provides depth here as well after averaging 10.4 points as a rookie in Portland .
