HONEOYE FALLS – Canandaigua needed a spark.

The Gray Wolves' halftime lead had quickly disappeared at Honeoye Falls-Lima. Momentum, too, had escaped them.

Mirras' kickoff return touchdown erased HFL's third-quarter momentum. Amid three rushing and two passing touchdowns by sophomore quarterback Austin Kierst, Canandaigua compiled a 41-20 victory in each side's Section V high school football opener on Friday.

Kierst threw one touchdown each to Aleks Hawryschuk and Declan Cooney. The latter, a goal line fade which saw Cooney climb above his defender, sealed the game with 3:14 remaining.

Sam Oliver scored two rushing touchdowns for HF-L, which evened the game at 14 aside before Mirra's third quarter TD. Benny Feinberg connected with Grady Goodberlet for the Cougars' other score.

Mistakes hurt HFL, including two fumbles and a muffed punt. Canandaigua won the field position battle early to help establish its lead.
