“An F”: Caitlin Clark accepts failure as Indiana Fever crushed by Aces in A'ja Wilson's 38-point showdown

The reigning WNBA MVP hit 15 of 19 shots and tied a playoff career high with 38 points. She also pulled down 16 rebounds, blocked four shots, stole the ball twice, handed out two assists and knocked down two threes. Indiana had no real answer for her.The Fever guard had a rough night at the other end too. Clark scored 15 points on 6-of-17 shooting, though she did add 10 assists for a double-double. Kelsey Mitchell struggled even more, hitting 4 of 16 for 12 points. Aliyah Boston led Indiana with 18, and Sophie Cunningham chipped in 13 off the bench. It was not enough to keep pace with an Aces offense that barely missed.Raven Johnson gives Caitlin Clark and the Fever one bright spotIndiana lost backup guard Tyasha Harris to a season-ending leg injury in the last regular-season game. Coach Stephanie White had said before the playoffs that rookie Raven Johnson could help fill the gap. She did.Johnson played 22 minutes off the bench in the postseason debut and scored 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting. She added two steals, an assist and a three-pointer. The two-time NCAA champion at South Carolina looked comfortable on a night when few teammates did. White said Johnson "did great" and gave the team the lift it needed on both ends.Clark, the newly crowned AP Comeback Player of the Year, was just as impressed with the 5-foot-8 rookie. She liked the offense, but she singled out the defensive intensity as exactly what Indiana needs from here on. In her view, Johnson puts in the work and can be counted on.Now the margin is gone. Game 2 is Tuesday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, with tipoff set for 6:30 p.m. ET. A second loss ends the Fever's season.
