Leeds United Star Excited After Leaving The Club: Best Decision For The Whites?

Willy Gnonto has completed a season-long loan move from Leeds United to Fiorentina, with Inside Futbol first reporting the agreement before Leeds confirmed the transfer on 1 September. The 22-year-old Italian winger pushed for an exit after a frustrating 2025/26 campaign, when he made 23 Premier League appearances but played only 524 minutes. Fiorentina have an option to sign him permanently, reported at €15 million, while the wider package has been described elsewhere at €21 million.

Leeds United loan gives Willy Gnonto a fresh start

The switch nearly collapsed on deadline day because Leeds wanted another winger before releasing Gnonto. That condition cleared when the club agreed a deal for Eintracht Frankfurt's Jean-Matteo Bahoya, who joined on loan with an obligation to buy.

Gnonto then spoke proudly about joining Fiorentina, calling his first Serie A opportunity with the club a source of pride. He said his previous experiences had helped him grow and wanted to repay the faith shown by the president and coach.

Speaking to Fiorentina Official (via Firenze Viola ), he said: "This is my first experience in Serie A with the first team. Doing it at Fiorentina is a source of pride.

"I'm young, but I've still had a wealth of experiences that have helped me grow. I want to share them here.

"Yes, they [the president and coach] all welcomed me warmly.

"They're all good people and excited to see me. I hope to repay their faith on the pitch.

"I really wanted to be here, now comes the good part: I know what I can give and I want to make myself available to everyone."

Leeds United may regret a temporary exit

For Gnonto, this move makes sense. His 2024/25 Championship season produced nine goals and six assists and earned him Leeds' Young Player of the Year award, yet promotion produced a very different picture. Last season brought 29 appearances across all competitions, but only one assist and no league goals, while his defensive work gave Daniel Farke another reason to limit his minutes.

A fresh start under Fabio Grosso could revive his confidence and Italy ambitions, especially after his senior international involvement and recent Under-21 appearances. Leeds United, meanwhile, could clear his wages and add another young winger in Bahoya, whose deal carries a reported €30 million mandatory package.

Given the £3.9 million Leeds paid for Gnonto, his upside always looked significant. The problem comes if Fiorentina decline their option after a strong season, because Leeds United could then face a player with reduced leverage, a year left on his contract and a much lower market value. That would leave the club wondering whether it should have pushed harder for a permanent sale in the first place.
