Rutgers Football Turns the Page at Kicker Ahead of 2026 Opener

Rutgers football will have a new starting kicker in 2026.

Dane Pizzaro has won the team's kicking competition and will take over as Rutgers' starting kicker, replacing veteran Jai Patel, as first reported by Chris Iseman of the Asbury Park Press.

The decision comes just one day before Rutgers opens its 2026 season against UMass on Thursday night at SHI Stadium.

Patel, a fifth-year senior and South Brunswick native, had been Rutgers' starting kicker for the past three seasons. His sudden replacement marks one of the more notable changes to Rutgers' special teams heading into the new season.

Patel Benched Despite Storied Rutgers Career

Patel's benching is notable because of what he has accomplished during his time with the Scarlet Knights.

After joining Rutgers as a walk-on, Patel eventually earned a scholarship and established himself as one of the most reliable kickers in the program.

He set a Rutgers record with 18 consecutive made field goals, a streak that began in 2024 and continued into the 2025 season. Patel also earned Big Ten recognition during his career and has delivered several important kicks for the Scarlet Knights.

One of his biggest moments came last season at Purdue, when Patel made both the game-tying and game-winning field goals in Rutgers' 27-24 victory.

But Patel's 2025 season was not quite as consistent as his previous campaigns.

He finished the season 13-for-18 on field-goal attempts, while Rutgers also dealt with several issues in its kicking operation. Patel had five misses during a stretch of Big Ten play, including some attempts that were affected by protection problems.

That inconsistency appears to have opened the door for Pizzaro.

Pizzaro has been waiting behind Patel for his chance, after arriving in Piscataway as a preferred walk-on following his high school career at Father Judge High School in Bensalem, Pennsylvania.

He was a star soccer player in high school before switching to football in his senior year, where he played both kicker and punter. He was named First Team All-Catholic Red Division as a punter in 2024 for Father Judge.

Pizzaro has a powerful leg and showed Rutgers' coaching staff that he could be an option from long range, in addition to making two extra points against Norfolk State in relief of Patel.

That became particularly apparent last season at Minnesota.

With Rutgers trailing late and needing a 56-yard field goal to tie the game, head coach Greg Schiano elected to send Pizzaro onto the field instead of Patel.

The attempt missed wide right, but the decision itself was telling. Rutgers viewed Pizzaro as having the leg to attempt a kick from a distance that was outside Patel's typical range.

Now, Pizzaro won't just be the long-distance option.

The move gives Rutgers a younger kicker with less game experience but potentially more upside, particularly when it comes to distance.

The Timing of the Decision is Significant

The timing of Rutgers' decision to hand the job to Pizzaro is also worth watching.

On the surface, Thursday's season opener against UMass is about as favorable of an environment as Rutgers could ask for a new kicker. The Minutemen went 0-12 last season, and Rutgers enters the game as a heavy favorite at SHI Stadium.

That allows Pizzaro to settle into his new role without immediately facing the pressure of a high-stakes matchup.

But the schedule gets considerably more difficult from there.

Rutgers travels to Boston College on Sept. 11 for its first road game of the season before returning home to face USC on Sept. 19.

The Boston College game could be particularly important for Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights are expected to compete for bowl eligibility this season, and a road win over the Eagles could prove to be one of the difference-makers on that path. While RU will be favored, this would be considered a swing game for the Knights.

The Trojans represent a completely different challenge from UMass and even BC, and Rutgers will enter that matchup as a significant underdog. That means Pizzaro could have just two weeks to establish himself before facing one of the toughest opponents on the schedule.

For that reason, this decision isn't simply about who kicks against UMass.

Rutgers is betting that Pizzaro is ready to handle the position before the games become significantly more consequential.

UMass provides the runway. Boston College provides the first real test. USC could provide the first major pressure moment.

If Pizzaro handles all three, Rutgers may quickly forget about the change at kicker.

If he struggles, the decision to move on from a veteran like Patel will become a much bigger storyline.
