The NHL trade rumors today are the same old bits of speculation, but the news is significant. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman confronted the spate of trade requests by players weaponizing their no-trade clauses and threatened to address the matter with the NHLPA if it persists. Unfortunately, Florida Panthers center Sasha Barkov suffered an ugly injury last night and left the ice immediately. A color analyst tried to joke with Jake Hughes between periods but offended him instead, and the awkward video is amusing. Nashville is poking around defensemen on the trade block, and the Pittsburgh Penguins might look different on Saturday.
I'm kicking myself a good bit today. I was going to ask Bettman about the trade requests on Wednesday when I had the chance. I wasn't quick enough on an early Q, and then the marketing of romance novels received a few questions, and I bagged it. I think we should talk about these requests, and I think the fans' voice should be heard loudly.
I have to read up on the Steelers game today. I didn't make it to the second half before falling fast asleep. After getting out of the arena after midnight Wednesday, I caught the train out of Philly at 6 a.m. to Harrisburg, where my car was waiting—that process saves two hours of driving or taking the train the whole way—so I made the noon practice.
I think I need more cardio. Sleep is such a waste of time.
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: In a bit of potential foreshadowing, the team sent Rutger McGroarty down to Wilkes-Barre on Thursday afternoon. The significance is that the injury news from practice had two parts: the good and the bad. First, Blake Lizotte was absent, but Ben Kindel was back and looking pretty, pretty good at Penguins practice .
Steelers Now: All things Steelers from the locker room to the field, the analysis of what happened (and I didn't see), to the fallout. The Steelers' comeback failed.
NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now
Florida Hockey Now: Ouch. Perhaps it will be better news than it appeared, but Sasha Barkov's leg buckled beneath him, and it was ugly. It wasn't the same knee that was surgically repaired, so there's some hope. But Florida lost to San Jose and lost Barkov, too .
The fallout could spread to a few cities (ahem, Dylan Larkin), but no one wants to see Barkov miss another year.
ESPN: Gary Bettman casually threatened to get involved if things don't settle down. Bettman is on the right side of this one (I believe), regarding players using their no-trade clauses to affect trades to preferred destinations .
Forever Blueshirts: Goalie goal! Igor Shesterkin shoots and scores .
NHLtraderumors.me: The Nashville Predators are on the hunt for defensemen, and they have been poking at the Montreal Canadiens for three of their D-men. Three?! It seems Nashville will take whichever Montreal will give .
TSN Insiders: Pavel Zacha and the Boston Bruins remain apart on a contract, and the two sides are getting a bit worried. Cue the trade rumors. Winnipeg is trying to ignore the Connor Hellebuyck situation, and Kyle Dubas is one of the people under consideration for Team Canada GM .
There's been quite a bit of chatter and angst in Edmonton over the goaltending situation. I would post it, but I fear it would trigger too many bad memories.
Sportsnet: But Mark Spector also took shots at the Oilers' poor defense, too. The good thing is that Edmonton is scoring goals like Mario in the 1980s. The bad thing is, they haven't yet stopped any .
Ouch. I used to live in this part of Awkwardville. Try to make a joke, think you're teasing, and the other person basically tells you to fly a kite. A.J. Mleczko on ESPN tried to chirp Jack Hughes, and it certainly did not go well.

She doubled down as he skated away. You can hear her conclude, "No sense of humor." I don't know, the joke was obviously not going to land, but we all move on…
