Erling Haaland was the difference once again as Manchester City got their Champions League campaign underway with a 2-0 win at Porto.

The Norway superstar scored the only goal as City beat Coventry 1-0 at the weekend and his second-half brace saw off Francesco Farioli's side in a hard-fought affair at Estadio do Dragao.

Haaland's game-sealing second, when he slotted home substitute Rayan Ait-Nouri's pass in the first minute of stoppage time, was his 36th in the Champions League for City, to equal Sergio Aguero 's club record. He also moved up to third on Manchester City 's all-time scoring charts with 167.

City were patient in the face of Porto's aggressive press and gradually took control of the opening half.

Porto were indebted to Diogo Costa for keeping the deadlock intact at the break with two stunning pieces of goalkeeping. First, the Portugal international produced a point-blank stop to deny Haaland from close range on the end of Antoine Semenyo 's cross, before thwarting Haaland and Rayan Cherki with a double reaction stop.

But keeping Haaland at bay for a prolonged period remains one of the toughest tasks in soccer and, when Enzo Fernandez found him with a dinked cross within two minutes of the restart, he nodded in his fourth of the season via the post

After taking the lead, City's poise deserved them. Alan Varella drove inches wide of the post right, and Gianluigi Donnarumma was relieved to see the ball skid wide of the other upright when he drilled a clearance into the onrushing William Gomes .

Porto have won five out of five domestically this term, but as they strained to avert a first home loss since December, chances started to present themselves at the other end. Haaland never needs too many invitations.

Porto vs. Man City highlights, key incidents

Porto have pushed hard for the equaliser but left an increasing number of spaces at the back. Rayan Ait-Nouri finds one of those and the City substitute tees up Haaland to slot home a low finish. Next!

City couldn't make their pressure count in the first half but they're in front now. Foden and Semenyo are involved as Cherki tries to go around Diogo Costa. He can't, but manages to keep the attack alive, Fernandez dinks a cross towards Haaland and the big man finds an uncharacteristically deft header that nestles in the net via the post.

Superb once again by Porto's goalkeeper. City engineer some room down the right channel and Foden crosses for Haaland, who hammers it back the way it came on the volley. It looks destined for the bottom corner but Diogo Costa reacts superbly and it then comes out to sprawl in the way of Cherki's follow-up. A heavy touch from Semenyo on the next rebound means the chance is gone.

21' Brilliant save from Diogo Costa to deny Haaland

City have hogged the ball calmly without creating too much but Foden and Semenyo quicken the tempo nicely. The latter hangs up a cross for Haaland to meet at the back post. Diogo Costa has minimal time to react but claws it away brilliantly.
