A youth hockey player has been suspended after viciously stick-slashing an opponent during a game over the weekend.

The hit — which has gone viral — happened during a game between mostly 11-year-old boys on the South Shore Kings and Bay State Breakers in Foxboro, Mass., on Saturday, Sept 19.

In video shared by 7News (Warning: Explicit language), the Bay State player surprised the Kings skater from behind and hit him in the face with his stick. Both fell to the ice, with the attacker's stick breaking in half.

After a referee quickly skated between the two boys, the victim was able to skate off the ice on his own, while the Bay State player was immediately ejected from the game.

Onlookers said the two players were involved in a tussle at mid-ice before the attack.

According to the father of the victim, the boy is okay after the incident.

Meanwhile, the Breakers player faces a lengthy suspension from the ice.

"The Breakers player has been suspended indefinitely from practices and games," a Bay State Breakers representative told 7NEWS.

Massachusetts Hockey, which oversees the teams, told 7NEWS that they are "aware of the incident and it is being handled in accordance with Massachusetts Hockey and USA Hockey's discipline processes."
