Oklahoma looks to continue impressive streak against New Mexico

The Oklahoma Sooners will face the New Mexico Lobos on Saturday for the first time in more than 90 years. The Sooners and Lobos have faced off twice before.

The first meeting took place in 1930, with Oklahoma beating New Mexico 47-0. Oklahoma followed that up with a 25-0 win in 1935. That means the Sooners have an impressive shutout streak going against the Lobos.

However, it will not be easy to keep that streak alive, despite the Sooners having one of the best defenses in college football. New Mexico has the No. 21-ranked rushing attack at 246 yards per game. The Lobos also rank No. 7 in the country in scoring offense at 54 points per game.

The Sooners enter the game at 1-1 and are coming off their first loss of the season. The offense struggled in that game, losing to the Michigan Wolverines 17-10. They desperately need a bounce-back game.

The Lobos, meanwhile, are 2-0 with two blowout wins. The offense has put up big numbers, while the defense ranks No. 2 in the country in total defense. They pose a significant threat to the Sooners on Saturday.

Oklahoma's history against New Mexico may suggest a comfortable matchup, but the current Lobos are a completely different team. New Mexico won nine games last season and has won eight of its last nine games dating back to mid-2025. Under head coach Jason Eck, the Lobos have developed into a confident, well-coached team that has been determined on both sides of the ball this season.

That makes Saturday's game much more than a chance for Oklahoma to add another win to a decades-old series. The Sooners are coming off a loss, their offense has plenty to prove and New Mexico arrives in Norman with the production and confidence to make Oklahoma work for every possession.

The Sooners may have dominated this matchup nine decades ago, but none of that matters Saturday. If Oklahoma wants to leave Norman with a win, it will have to earn it against a New Mexico team that has every reason to believe it can pull off the upset.
