Arsenal cup match at Fleetwood Town paused due to drone
A flying object caused a stoppage of just less than 10 minutes during the Gunners' visit to Fleetwood Town.
Arsenal's Carabao Cup match with Fleetwood Town was only two minutes old when referee Michael Salisbury stopped the match because of a drone hovering above the field.
The delay lasted less than 10 minutes as Salisbury spoke with both teams' coaching staffs, police and organizers at the intimate Highbury Stadium in northwest England.
Both teams kept warm for five minutes by staying on the field and passing a ball around before the referee called over the captains in the 8th minute and explained why he was pulling the teams off the field.
The source of the drone looked to be identified, and play resumed in the 10th minute with a free kick where an Arsenal player had been fouled eight minutes earlier.
Even before the stoppage, there were some confusing moments at the start of the game. Fleetwood Town play in red shirts with white sleeves and at a venue called Highbury, matching Arsenal's typical kit and the name of their former venue.
Fleetwood Town's Highbury, however, holds just 5,327 fans, with around 2,600 of those seated. The League Two club scored the opener thanks to 20-year-old Aaron Loupalo-Bi.
