Former Baylor quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III wants to return to his alma mater, this time as its head football coach.
Griffin, who won the Heisman Trophy in 2011, confirmed he has spoken with Baylor officials about the opening after the school fired Dave Aranda on Sunday, according to Front Office Sports .
"If I was making all the decisions, the decision would have already been made, right?" Griffin told Front Office Sports Tonight. "But that's not the process, and I'm looking forward to going through that process with Baylor University to have real, concrete conversations."
Griffin, an eight-year NFL veteran, has never coached at the college or professional level, a potential obstacle to landing the job.
The former quarterback argued that college football's changing landscape requires more than coaching experience. He emphasized leadership, recruiting and building a winning culture.
"The coaching in college is no longer about who calls plays," Griffin said. "It's about being a CEO and being able to manage not only the pressure, but also building a culture of winning."
Griffin also pointed to his Texas roots, recruiting connections and familiarity with Baylor's Christian mission as qualifications for the position.
Baylor fired Aranda after seven seasons and a 40-40 record, including one bowl victory.
Griffin, who has a statue outside Baylor's McLane Stadium, said he believes he has the support and leadership skills to turn the program around.
Regardless of Baylor's decision, Griffin said he will continue supporting his alma mater and its pursuit of sustained success.
