Texas makes emphatic opening statement in routing Texas State with No. 1 Ohio State up next

AUSTIN - Texas delivered exactly was expected.

Senior quarterback Arch Manning threw four touchdown passes, two of them to celebrated transfer wide receiver Cam Coleman , and the fifth-ranked Longhorns raced to a dominant 59-7 win over Texas State on a steamy Saturday at Royal-Memorial Stadium.

Manning started what may be his final collegiate season with a highly efficient game. He completed 20 of 27 passes for 305 yards and four scores before leaving midway through the third quarter, connecting with Coleman twice and Ryan Wingo and Hollywood Smothers once each.

The Longhorns were very effective, scoring touchdowns on six of their first seven possessions and burying their neighbors down I-35. Backup KJ Lacey Jr. relieved Manning during the third quarter and led Texas to a score on his first series.

Expectations have rarely been higher for Texas , coming off a 10-3 season and a bowl win over Michigan but missing a spot in the College Football Playoff.

The Longhorns square off at home next Saturday night against preseason No. 1 Ohio State , which clobbered 50-point underdog Ball State 56-3 on Saturday.

Texas' defense under new coordinator Will Muschamp produced three takeaways, including an interception by transfer linebacker Rasheem Biles , and held one of college football's most explosive offenses to a single touchdown and 321 total yards.

Texas State, which is projected to finish anywhere from fourth to sixth in the reconfigured Pac-12, has won three straight bowl games but was no match for one of the nation's best teams. The Bobcats' new kicker, Dylan Cunanan from Toledo, was wide left on two field goal tries from 24 and 35 yards.

Texas jumped to a 28-0 lead in the first half, scoring on its first three offensive possessions and on Graceson Littleton 's 59-yard fumble return. The lead could have grown, but the Longhorns had to settle for a 28-7 advantage at halftime when Manning was looking for Emmett Mosley V and threw into double coverage for an easy interception by rover Ryan Nolan .

The defense was active and punishing against an effective Bobcats offense that ranked fifth in the nation last year and has averaged 36.5 points a game in head coach G.J. Kinne's three seasons in San Marcos.

Three different Longhorns scored on offense in the first two quarters, but Texas State had just 58 fewer yards at the half than its host.

Manning completed 15 of 20 throws for 203 yards and threw a pair of touchdown passes on Texas' first two possessions.

He completed an easy 6-yard pass to Coleman and an 8-yard flip pass to Wingo on the jet sweep. Transfer running back Raleek Brown scored on a 13-yard burst up the middle.

Texas needed just six plays to get on the scoreboard. Hollywood Smothers juked cornerback Amarion Atwood out of his cleats on a 45-yard gain on the Longhorns' first offensive snap of the game, and Manning found a wide open Coleman for an easy 6-yard touchdown in the left flat when Atwood fell down.
