The Dallas Cowboys won the Joey Porter Jr sweepstakes . That said, they were not the only NFC teams tracking the Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback before his stunning departure. According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz of The Schultz Report, the Detroit Lions and New York Giants also expressed interest in acquiring Porter as Pittsburgh's contract stalemate with the defensive back reached a breaking point.
Schultz reported that the Steelers determined in recent days that an agreement was no longer realistic after extension talks stalled ahead of Week 1. That ultimately prompted Pittsburgh to move the former first-round selection . Detroit and New York both explored the possibility of upgrading their secondaries . Dallas, though, emerged as the most aggressive and persistent suitor. The Cowboys ultimately sent Pittsburgh a 2028 second-round pick and a 2027 sixth-rounder for Porter. Now, Dallas adds a physical perimeter presence to a secondary dealing with early-season injuries.
His ability to play press coverage should give the Cowboys defense another weapon opposite DaRon Bland while adding needed size and physicality outside. The move also reunites Porter with former Steelers teammates George Pickens and Broderick Jones in Dallas. That's after the Cowboys have made multiple notable transactions involving Pittsburgh.

Porter entered the NFL as the No. 32 overall pick in the 2023 draft. He quickly established himself as a physical boundary corner. He became a full-time starter midway through his rookie campaign and earned PFWA All-Rookie Team honors. His 34-inch arms and aggressive press technique have since helped him develop into a disruptive perimeter defender. Now, Dallas is betting that Porter can become a long-term anchor in its secondary.
