Giants reveal significant Willy Adames injury news amid Reds series

The San Francisco Giants may have to make do without their starting shortstop.

Willy Adames was placed on the injured list on Monday by the NL West club.

According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle , Adames has been diagnosed with a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow.

"It's his non-throwing (left) elbow, so it's possible that rest and rehab will be all that's required," Slusser wrote.

Reportedly, Adames suffered the injury while sliding into home plate on Sunday against the Boston Red Sox .

He slid feet first and scored from second base on an RBI single, but it was an awkward slide. It appeared Adames had to stop himself from falling using his left arm.

"It's something that I think he can work to rehab, see where it's at, get it reevaluated, and then go from there," Giants manager Tony Vitello told Slusser about Adames' injury.

This is the second year of the seven-year, $182 million contract Adames signed with the Giants before the 2025 season.

Like many Giants players, he's having a down year at the plate. In 121 games, Adames is hitting .230/.289/.424 with 21 home runs and a .713 OPS, 43 points below his career average.
