Bears Camp Report: Darnell Wright injured, Corners return, Jordan van den Berg with the ones, and more
There was a lot going on at the Bears practice at Halas Hall today. @wiltfongjr shares some news here.
The Chicago Bears held their final training camp practice in front of the fans today at Halas Hall, and before they got into a red zone period, cornerback Jaylon Johnson brought the team together for a meeting with the message that the practice wasn't good enough. The message was heard as tight end Cole Kmet said in his post-practice presser, "I thought it ended up being one of our better practices through camp so far."
A strong finish for the nearly 2-hour practice before what will likely be a light workout tomorrow and a joint practice with the Tennessee Titans on Thursday. The Bears play the Titans to close the preseason slate on Saturday.
The Bears could be without a few players the rest of the week, as several left today with an injury, most notably starting right tackle Darnell Wright , who exited to Halas Hall with trainers as he flexed his right arm. That's the same arm he injured last season, so hopefully there's good news coming about that.
Defensive tackle Gervon Dexter Sr. also left with an injury, and in case you missed it, he was at the center of a trade rumor today . Tight end Hayden Large was sidelined with a left arm issue, and cornerback Dontae Manning also left practice and did not return.
Running back Kyle Monangai is still week-to-week, new defensive end Marcus Davenport wasn't practicing, and defensive end Austin Booker , who missed Saturday's game in Cincinnati , was also not participating.
However, the Bears did get some good news on the injury front. Safety Elijah Hicks and rookie linebacker Keyshaun Elliott were activated from the PUP list, and both got in some work. Quarterback Tyson Bagent returned after missing last week with a hamstring issue. Cornerback Tyrique Stevenson was back in team drills, starting along with Jaylon Johnson. Backup corners Terell Smith and Jaylon Jones were also back, but neither did team drills. Left tackle Ozzy Trapilo was suited up but still just doing individual drills.
Rookie DT Jordan van den Berg was working some with the starters.
With Booker not practicing, Jamree Kromah was getting some work with the ones. ( link )
Defensive lineman James Lynch also spent time with the first team.
While head coach Ben Johnson said at his pre-practice press conference that they are still trying to figure out left tackle, Braxton Jones was with the ones most of the day. "From the angle I had, looked like LT Braxton Jones did a nice job in 9-on-7 period," shared Brad Biggs. "For the snaps he was in, there sure was an emphasis to run to his side. Three of the four D'Andre Swift runs went for nice gains."
Theo Benedet went in with the ones at right tackle with Wright out.
Cam Lewis got most of the work at safety next to rookie Dillon Thieneman. Ben Johnson said this morning that the safety spot next to the rookie is also an uncertainty.
Someone check the wind, because Zack Pearson shared that " Cairo Santos just drained a 59-yard field goal."
They closed practice with a long drive drill to test their cardio (link), and safety Xavier Woods ended practice by intercepting Case Keenum .
Per CHGO's Adam Hoge, defensive tackle Grady Jarrett yelled "Get up!" at d-linemen Jordan van den Berg and Montez Sweat when both were on a knee during the long drive drill.
Quarterback Caleb Williams and the first team offense had a mix of good and bad throughout the day. Williams moved the offense from its own 1 yard line when he found Rome Odunze down the middle for a big gain on third down. But Williams then completed one of his six pass attempts during a 7-on-7 drill — one of those were a drop by running back D'Andre Swift. The first team offense had a good red zone period working from the defense's 14 yard line. Williams found Odunze once again for a touchdown pass before Swift ran in 14 yards for another touchdown on the following play.
