After two seasons with the Dallas Mavericks , he decided to join forces with the Miami Heat led by Giannis Antetokounmpo and Coach Erik Spoelstra. Why exactly did he make that call? It all came down to adding another ring to his resume.

It is no secret that Klay Thompson found his perfect match with the Heat. When Giannis Antetokounmpo is on the floor, teams typically build a wall to prevent him from scoring in the paint. How does Coach Erik Spoelstra solve this problem? Shooters.

The Heat are no stranger to this conundrum. Coach Spoelstra experienced the same situation with LeBron James . Back then, they got Shane Battier , Mike Miller, Mario Chalmers , James Jones and Ray Allen . Now, they'll do the same with Antetokounmpo after Thompson arrives.

This schematic and rotation fit makes so much sense for the Heat . In fact, Thompson posits that his aim really is to hoist the Larry O'Brien trophy once again. If it means he has to play that specific role for Coach Spoelstra and Antetokounmpo, he would gladly do it.

He even outlined other reasons for joining the Heat in his introductory press conference.

"Just the opportunity to play high-level basketball throughout the season and the chance to make a deep postseason run. Those things were so attractive to me. Obviously, you want to maximize your potential as an athlete. I've tasted winning before; there's really nothing like it. Even just getting there and failing is better than not having a shot at it... Looking at the roster, it looked like a great fit as far as me being able to space the floor," Thompson declared.

Thompson couldn't compete to his full potential after the Warriors ' 2022 NBA Championship run. Stephen Curry and the Warriors couldn't make it over the hump again, despite certain acquisitions. When he moved to the Mavericks, they tanked for Cooper Flagg in one season. During his last run with them, it was also clear it was a developmental year to define their identity.

This time around, Thompson will be surrounded by other veteran stars who have been craving a Larry O'Brien trophy. All he has to do is start knocking down shots, spacing the floor, and playing tighter defense if he wants that fifth ring to land on his finger come 2027.
