Weather Cancels Darlington Qualifying Tyler Reddick Lands Pole

The NASCAR Cup Series playoff opener at Darlington Raceway got an unexpected twist Saturday afternoon.

Practice and qualifying for the Cook Out Southern 500 were canceled because of lightning and severe weather in the area , meaning drivers never got the opportunity to put down a qualifying lap. NASCAR ultimately used its established metric to determine Sunday's starting lineup.

The weather delay began before drivers could get meaningful track time.

Lightning repeatedly moved into the area around Darlington, forcing NASCAR to delay the on-track session. Even though significant rain never arrived, the continued lightning made it impossible for officials to safely continue. After multiple delays, NASCAR eventually canceled both practice and qualifying.

That means teams will head into the opening race of the 2026 Chase without the normal practice and qualifying data they would have expected.

The cancellation turned out to be great news for Tyler Reddick .

Reddick will start Sunday's Southern 500 from the pole position in his No. 45 23XI Racing Toyota. Daniel Suárez will join him on the front row. Ryan Preece, Denny Hamlin and Michael McDowell round out the top five.

For Reddick, it's an especially important starting spot. He enters the playoffs as one of the championship contenders and already has a Darlington victory this season.

Reddick called the situation a "best-case scenario" for his team after the cancellation, noting that his confidence was already high heading into the weekend.

While Reddick benefited, several playoff contenders weren't nearly as fortunate.

Kyle Larson will start 25th, Ryan Blaney 24th, Ross Chastain 23rd and William Byron 20th. Carson Hocevar will start 34th, while Chris Buescher starts 35th.

That could make Sunday's race even more chaotic.

Darlington is already one of NASCAR's most difficult tracks, and starting position can be especially important when drivers are trying to protect championship points.

The Southern 500 is the first race of the 10-race NASCAR playoff , making the cancellation even more significant.

With no practice and no qualifying laps, teams will have to rely heavily on their previous experience and simulator work. Drivers starting deeper in the field will have to fight through traffic at one of the toughest tracks on the schedule.

The weather may have canceled qualifying, but it didn't cancel the drama. The 2026 Chase is officially underway, and Darlington is already throwing a curveball at the championship contenders.
