The Brookhaven defense made its presence felt all night long in the Panthers' 49-16 win over South Jones.

In the first quarter of the game on Oct. 23 at South Jones High School, Brookhaven (8-0) scored two defensive touchdowns, sucking the energy out of the home crowd and helping the the Panthers jump out to an early 28-0 lead.

The unit is typically led by senior defensive lineman and University of Texas commit Derwin Fields, and while Fields had an impactful night in the trenches, the defensive standouts for Brookhaven were sophomore defensive end Landon Baker and senior defensive back Reece McNulty, both of whom returned interceptions for touchdowns in the first quarter.

"It just made me happy," Fields said. "It's just great seeing them on the field doing what they got to do and executing the job."

The fast start set the tone for the rest of the game and quickly killed any upset aspirations that South Jones (6-3) had. In the second quarter, safety Semaj Ross intercepted a pass for the defense's third of the first half.

"I was very pleased with how we came out in the beginning," Brookhaven coach Darien Dorsey said. "We were locked in. We matched the energy that they brought to the game."

Fields' night was not flashy, but South Jones' offense continued to run the ball away from him throughout the game. Still, Fields recorded three tackles for loss and a quarterback hit.

"Once I figured out that they were trying to run the ball away from me, I was just trying to do my job so everybody else could step in and make the play," Fields said.

In the second half, Brookhaven's defense continued to shut down South Jones, allowing just three points in the final two quarters. In three games this month, Brookhaven's opponents are averaging 9.67 points per game.

On the other side of the ball, the Panthers dominated on the ground. Junior Adrian Blakely and seniors Jordyn Kees and A'Semiyon Smith combined for five rushing touchdowns, but Blakely led the way with three.

"We've got a great running back room," Dorsey said. "We've got three guys that, in any given moment, we can give them the ball. And the offensive line did a phenomenal job of getting them lanes to run in."

Brookhaven returns to action next week against North Pike, looking to stay perfect on the season, but Dorsey and the Panthers are not focused on their undefeated record.

"One game at a time," Dorsey said. "I always tell them that each school that we play have our names circled on that schedule, so they're going to bring out their best. We've got to be able to meet that challenge."
