Moyes disappointed by Everton transfer window but insists club must keep moving forward

David Moyes admits he was disappointed by Everton's transfer window but insists the club must move on and continue pushing in the right direction ahead of Sunday's clash with Manchester United.

Everton were unable to complete all of their planned business before the deadline, while losing Iliman Ndiaye to Manchester City and Tim Iroegbunam during a late period of activity.

"Disappointed, we didn't do more business," Moyes said. "Disappointed, things didn't go our way in the end.

"But sometimes in football you have to live with disappointments and we will and we'll move on."

The failed pursuit of Folarin Balogun was one of the major setbacks, with Moyes confirming the deal collapsed because of an issue with the striker's medical.

"Ultimately it happens in football," he said. "The player had a problem in his medical and that was simply it. So there's no other stories behind it really, that's exactly what happened."

Everton had also been hoping to generate funds from player departures, with Moyes acknowledging that the decision to retain Harrison Armstrong affected their ability to complete further deals.

"We were looking to get some money in and ultimately those things were getting talked about," he said.

"We lost Illy who was someone we definitely didn't want to lose."

Moyes admitted Everton's small squad will now require players to be versatile, while the door could open for academy prospects.

"We've got a really small squad now and it sometimes gives people opportunities maybe who haven't had them," he said.

"You need to be given that chance to show what you can do."

The Everton boss confirmed the club are also looking at the free-agent market, although he stressed his ambition remains to challenge towards the top end of the Premier League.

"The disappointment would be that I want to keep pressing on, I want to keep the club moving in the right direction and I want the players to believe we're moving in the right direction."

Moyes also addressed reports of a potential late Chelsea bid for James Garner, dismissing them as "completely untrue".

He acknowledged, however, that Everton may eventually have to sell players if major clubs come calling.

"I've had to sell Mikel Arteta to Arsenal and I've had to sell Wayne Rooney to Man United," Moyes said.

"If we're going to lose players we want to keep getting better."

Moyes also revealed he has not discussed potential investment with Everton's new owners, saying it was outside his jurisdiction.

However, he believes the different departments at the club are gradually becoming more aligned.

"I think we've got new owners in who are still finding their way at the club," he said.

"As we get to know each other a lot better and a bit more I think it will get better."

Attention now turns to Sunday's meeting with Manchester United, with Moyes praising Michael Carrick for guiding United back into the Champions League.

"I think he's done an amazing job," Moyes said. "He's steadied them, I think he knows how the club runs, how it works.
