Jinxed? Bayern Munich dethroned from top of the table after a record 67 matchdays

Bayern Munich dropped points early in the Bundesliga as Schalke 04 held off the record champions for a 0-0 draw. Vincent Kompany's bulldozing run of the league where his team have dominated the pole position for 67 consecutive matchdays has come to an end.

The Bavarians are currently at 4th position behind SC Freiburg, Der Klassiker rivals Borussia Dortmund and newly promoted SV Elversberg coming from Saarland, Germany.

Miron Muslić set up the home side to cut the passing lanes and force Bayern to contest for the ball every time they entered Schalke's third of the pitch. 18 interceptions by Muslić's men were the result of intelligent movement by the Royal Blues in anticipation of a Bavarian pass.

Schalke also showed that to trouble Bayern, you don't have to outplay them. You just need to be good at rushing them and forcing a duel and a decision at the same time. Bayern's wastefulness in front of goal, Schalke goalkeeper Loris Karius' heroics along with some poor luck saw all six big chances missed. The Veltins-Arena witnessed their team finally draw a point against Die Roten after nine years.

A humble apology for the folks who believe we jinxed the record by writing about it. If there was one team who I did not see bothering the record, it was Schalke against whom Bayern have a fantastic win ratio. But, here we are.

Anyway, it has been sometime since Bayern was hunting for the pole position and this opening should incentivize the other teams to keep the Bavarians from becoming the leaders of the pack again.
