Falcons Recap: Stefanski sets stage for season-long QB debate

The Atlanta Falcons finally named a starting quarterback for their season opener, but somehow it still feels like there are more questions than answers surrounding the QB1 job. For now, though, the team is locked in on Sunday's season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In today's Falcons Wire Recap, Tua Tagovailoa is officially named the Week 1 starter, Michael Penix Jr. discusses his injury status, Xavier Watts gets All-Pro hype from ESPN, and Kevin Stefanski sets the stage for a season-long QB controversy.

The Falcons named Tua Tagovailoa their starting quarterback for Sunday's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. It will be the sixth consecutive season that the Falcons roll out a different Week 1 starter at the NFL's most-prized position.

Tagovailoa completed 10 of 13 pass attempts for 117 yards over two preseason games, and while he hasn't exactly impressed in training camp, the veteran QB will look to redeem himself after losing his starting job with the Miami Dolphins last season. Hopefully, a fresh start (and a side of Bijan Robinson) is all Tua needs to turn things around.

However, Stefanski didn't exactly say that Tagovailoa won the QB competition, which leads us to our next point.

Stefanski won't commit to QB beyond Week 1

"Tua will start," Stefanski confirmed at his Monday press conference. "Cooper Rush will be the backup. Mike Penix will be inactive. Really, really proud of those guys. And I told them this morning, I think those guys have worked like crazy all offseason. They've pushed each other and supported each other."

While the Falcons may be rolling with Tagovailoa in Week 1, Stefanski did not make a definitive announcement when asked if Penix was still in the mix for the starting QB job.

"I'm gonna really stay in Week 1. I'm not going to speculate past that, I don't think it's fair to anyone at this point."

Michael Penix's comments add to QB controversy

Penix said he told Stefanski that he was not where needed to be to play in Sunday's game. And while Penix indicated he's close to being 100 percent, the third-year QB said wants to feel a little bit more confident in his knee before making his regular season debut.

"I had that conversation and I just told [Stefanski], 'I'm not where I want to be right now,'" Penix explained to reporters on Monday. "I want to be able to be 100 percent so I can help this team win football games. And I'm really close."

Even after Penix's comments, it's a little bit hard to fathom the Falcons actually leaving the decision up to their quarterback. In fact, the team seems to be going to great lengths to avoid saying anything remotely concrete regarding the quarterback position.

Stefanski initially revealed that Penix was cleared for contact immediately following QB Jack Strand's big performance against the Colts. This could have just been a coincidence, but similar to the latest Penix news, it all feels very convenient for the coaching staff.

Instead of naming either quarterback the starter, the team can point to the fact that Penix wasn't ready. It's a good strategy if you want to avoid being scrutinized in the moment, but a definitive declaration might be the better long-term move for Stefanski and the Falcons, assuming they actually want to make the playoffs this season.

ESPN predicts All-Pro team appearance for Falcons safety

Just how much better Falcons safety Xavier Watts can get is anybody's guess, but at least one analyst thinks he has All-Pro potential. Here's Seth Walder at ESPN predicting a big award for Watts at the end of the season.

"Bold prediction for 2026: Safety Xavier Watts will be a first- or second-team All-Pro. A 2025 third-round pick, Watts had an impressive rookie season in which he recorded five interceptions. If he builds on that, he'll start to be considered among the league's top safeties."

According to league insider Albert Breer at Sports Illustrated, the Falcons actually have the oldest roster in the NFL this year. If this news comes as a surprise, you're definitely not alone. The Falcons recently signed veteran edge rusher Za'Darius Smith (33 years old) and also kept 32-year-old backup Cooper Rush as one of four quarterbacks on the roster.
