Mountain West Connection Football: MW Week 8 Players of the Week
Major upsets are shaking up the conference
Week 8 brought major developments in the Mountain West race, with Wyoming knocking off Air Force, New Mexico handing North Dakota State a costly defeat, Hawai'i rolling past Northern Illinois and Nevada earning a much-needed Homecoming win over San José State.
The weekend featured explosive offensive performances, defensive plays that decided games and a special-teams return that helped swing momentum. With New Mexico and Wyoming strengthening their positions near the top of the conference standings, here are this week's Mountain West Connection Players of the Week.
Offensive Player of the Week: Tyler Hughes, Wyoming
Hughes delivered one of the weekend's most complete performances, leading Wyoming to a 28-14 victory over Air Force in Laramie.
The Cowboys quarterback accounted for 259 total yards and three touchdowns, combining 146 rushing yards with 113 passing yards. He averaged more than 12 yards per carry and finished without a turnover against an Air Force team that entered the game with one of the conference's most dangerous rushing attacks.
Hughes immediately put pressure on the Falcons, opening the scoring with a 68-yard touchdown run. He also threw touchdown passes to Jake Wilson and Samuel Harris before Wyoming added a fourth-quarter rushing score to seal the victory.
The performance was especially important for a Wyoming team that has steadily improved after a difficult start to the season. The Cowboys are now 5-3 overall and 4-1 in conference play, putting themselves firmly in the Mountain West championship conversation.
Hughes earns this week's offensive honor for his ability to hurt Air Force with both his arm and his legs while protecting the football.
Defensive Player of the Week: Austin Brawley, New Mexico
New Mexico's 21-16 victory over North Dakota State featured a defensive play worthy of deciding a major conference matchup.
With the Lobos clinging to a five-point lead in the fourth quarter, defensive back Austin Brawley intercepted North Dakota State quarterback Nathan Hayes and returned the ball 56 yards for a touchdown. The score gave New Mexico the cushion it needed to survive the Bison's late push.
North Dakota State scored again but could not complete the comeback, as New Mexico forced a turnover on downs to secure the win.
Brawley's interception was the defining moment in a game where points were difficult to find. The Lobos also recorded nine tackles for loss, disrupting the Bison's running game and forcing Hayes to shoulder more of the offensive burden through the air.
New Mexico held North Dakota State to 16 points and secured one of its biggest victories of the season. The Lobos improved to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in conference play, while Brawley's pick-six proved to be the difference.
Special Teams Player of the Week: Ky Woods, Nevada
Nevada needed a spark against San José State, and Woods provided it at a crucial moment.
The Wolf Pack led 21-10 in the fourth quarter when the Spartans scored a touchdown to cut the margin to 21-13. Woods responded with a 90-yard kickoff return, setting Nevada up in excellent field position and changing the momentum immediately.
On the very next play, running back Dominic Kelley punched in a four-yard touchdown to restore Nevada's 18-point advantage. The Wolf Pack went on to win 28-13.
Woods' return was the turning point in a game where Nevada's defense had controlled much of the action. The Wolf Pack held San José State to just 70 total yards through the first three quarters and limited the Spartans to 179 yards for the game.
Nevada improved to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in Mountain West play. Woods' return did not go for a touchdown, but its timing and direct impact on the scoreboard make him a deserving special-teams selection.
Micah Alejado, Hawai'i — Offense: Alejado threw for 323 yards and three touchdowns in the Rainbow Warriors' 56-21 victory. His passing performance helped Hawai'i produce its highest-scoring outing of the season.
Luke Duncan, Nevada — Offense: Duncan completed 18 of 29 passes for 178 yards and two touchdowns without an interception in Nevada's 28-13 win over San José State. He delivered career highs in passing yards and touchdown passes.
Wyoming defense — Defense: The Cowboys forced three Air Force fumbles and recorded seven tackles for loss, disrupting a Falcons offense that had been difficult to contain throughout the season.
Dominic Kelley, Nevada — Offense: Kelley carried the ball 24 times for 82 yards and a touchdown, helping Nevada control possession and close out its Homecoming victory.
Week 8 reinforced how quickly the Mountain West race can change. New Mexico strengthened its position at the top with a win over North Dakota State, while Wyoming continued its climb with a statement victory over Air Force. Nevada also showed signs of progress by combining a disciplined defensive performance with timely special-teams execution.
Hughes was the weekend's most productive offensive player, Brawley delivered the defensive play of the week and Woods supplied the momentum-changing return. Meanwhile, Hawai'i's blowout win offered a glimpse of what its offense can accomplish when everything clicks.
With the season entering its final stretch, every conference victory carries added weight. New Mexico and Wyoming have put themselves in strong positions, but Week 8 showed that the race remains far from settled.
