Reading 1 Brentford 2: Carvalho marks comeback with goal as Bees progress to Carabao Cup round four

Fábio Carvalho marked his first competitive appearance in 318 days with a goal as Brentford defeated Reading 2-1 to progress to round four of the Carabao Cup.

Callum Wilson opened the scoring inside three minutes before Carvalho doubled the Bees' advantage in first-half stoppage time. Paudie O'Connor pulled one back for Reading after the break, but Keith Andrews' side held firm at Select Car Leasing Stadium.

The Bees boss made eight changes to his starting XI. Among those coming into the side was Carvalho , who was involved in a competitive fixture for the first time since Brentford's trip to Crystal Palace on 1 November 2025.

The midfielder was subsequently sidelined with an anterior cruciate ligament injury before returning to action with the B team and featuring for the first team against Rennes in pre-season.

Goalkeeper Ellery Balcombe made his second senior appearance for the club, while summer signing El Hadji Malick Diouf started for the first time .

Brentford took the lead inside three minutes. Carvalho fed Dango Ouattara down the right and, when he slipped while attempting to collect the return pass, the ball ran through to Wilson . The striker swept a composed finish into the bottom corner from 12 yards.

Rico Henry , partnering Kristoffer Ajer in central defence, made an important intervention, cutting out Josh Stokes' through ball before Randell Williams could latch on to it.

The Royals had the ball in the net on 12 minutes through Paudie O'Connor's acrobatic finish, but the referee ruled it out for a high foot.

O'Connor then headed Charlie Savage 's free-kick from the left onto the roof of the net, while Diouf's long-range effort at the opposite end flew over the crossbar.

Midway through the half, Randell Williams worked the ball into the box and Balcombe made a sprawling save to deny Jamie Reid.

Reading kept the attack alive. Williams' deflected cross travelled towards the back post, where Reid slipped as he attempted to meet it, and the ball bounced behind for a goal-kick.

Damsgaard 's cross from the right was flicked on by Wilson and Keane Lewis-Potter met it with a fierce strike, forcing Joel Pereira to launch himself to his right and push the ball behind for a corner.

Diouf sent the ball up the channel and O'Connor's slip presented Wilson with a sight of goal, but the striker could not generate enough power to trouble Pereira, who gathered his shot comfortably.

Lewis-Potter then teed up Carvalho on the edge of the box, but his shot was blocked by a Reading defender.

Henry produced another vital intervention on 45 minutes, racing back to poke the ball away from Reid as the forward closed in on goal. From the resulting corner, Conor Masterson glanced Savage's in-swinging delivery narrowly wide .

Brentford doubled their lead in the final seconds before the break. Ouattara played a defence-splitting pass that Wilson cleverly dummied, allowing the ball to run into Carvalho's path. The midfielder took a touch to set himself before calmly slotting home.

Shortly after the restart, Brentford moved the ball from left to right across the face of Reading's penalty area. Ouattara received a pass from Wilson and drove narrowly wide from 10 yards.

Balcombe got down quickly to smother Josh Stokes' shot after the ball broke to him in the Bees' box.

Andrews' side came close to adding a third on 63 minutes. Henry clipped a first-time cross towards the back post, where Ouattara's header was clawed away by Pereira. Kayode then fired into the side netting from close range.

Ouattara then threatened again, heading Kayode's cross just over the bar.

Reading reduced the deficit on 72 minutes. Ajer bravely blocked Stokes' goal bound effort, but O'Connor nodded home from Savage's resulting corner.

Kayode's cross bounced through to substitute Igor Thiago as the Bees looked to restore their two-goal advantage, but the striker failed to make clean contact and Pereira gathered comfortably.

Thiago turned provider moments later, teeing up Damsgaard on the edge of the box, but the Dane skewed his effort high and wide.

Thiago latched on to Lewis-Potter's ball over the top and held off Jeriel Dorsett , but Pereira raced off his line to narrow the angle and deny the striker.

Jannik Schuster headed in a corner in the final seconds, but the referee disallowed the goal for a foul.

Brentford will find out their next Carabao Cup opponents following the conclusion of the televised tie between Manchester United and Brighton and Hove Albion on Wednesday night.
