Patriots Cut First External Addition Of Offseason In Roster Surprise

The New England Patriots ' first outside addition of the offseason will not make it to Week 1.

New England released veteran outside linebacker Jesse Luketa as part of its initial wave of roster cuts, according to Mark Daniels of MassLive . The decision came less than six months after the Patriots signed Luketa to a one-year contract.

Luketa was not a headline-grabbing acquisition, but his combination of NFL experience and special teams ability appeared to give him a legitimate path to the 53-man roster.

Instead, the Patriots moved on before Sunday's 6 p.m. ET deadline.

That makes Luketa one of the more surprising names among the team's early cuts.

Jesse Luketa Brought Experience To Patriots

Luketa entered the NFL as a seventh-round pick of the Arizona Cardinals in 2022. The Penn State product appeared in 31 games over three seasons with Arizona, making three starts. The 6-foot-3, 253-pound defender recorded 35 tackles, three sacks and one forced fumble during his time with the Cardinals. All three of those sacks came during the 2024 season.

Luketa also played extensively on special teams, an area that typically gives reserve linebackers an advantage during roster competitions.

After leaving Arizona, Luketa spent part of the 2025 season on the Los Angeles Rams' practice squad. He did not appear in a game before New England signed him March 5, making him the Patriots' first external addition of the 2026 offseason.

That early investment did not guarantee him anything under Mike Vrabel.

Luketa recorded three tackles in New England's 37-13 preseason loss to the Cleveland Browns, but he failed to produce a sack, takeaway or other defining play during the preseason.

Patriots' Younger Linebackers Gain Ground

Luketa's release offers another indication of how New England views its younger options on the edge. The Patriots selected Gabe Jacas in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft and added Quintayvious Hutchins in the seventh. They also drafted Namdi Obiazor in the sixth round to strengthen the second level of their defense.

Jacas started all three preseason games after returning from the non-football injury list, while Obiazor led New England with 11 tackles in the finale against Cleveland, according to the Patriots' official game notes .

Veterans Harold Landry III and Dre'Mont Jones also occupy prominent positions in the Patriots' pass-rush rotation.

That left Luketa battling for a reserve role in a crowded position group. His NFL experience and special teams background made him a plausible candidate, but the Patriots evidently decided those traits were not enough to justify keeping him over a younger player with more developmental upside.

New England's decision also reinforces Vrabel's roster philosophy. Joining the team early and having prior NFL experience did not buy Luketa extra time. The Patriots signed him before making any other outside addition this offseason, evaluated him throughout the spring and summer, and still concluded they had better options.

For Luketa, the timing at least gives him an opportunity to find another team before the regular season begins. For the Patriots, his departure suggests their younger linebackers did enough to force a veteran out of the picture.
