Phillies 24-Year-Old Pitcher Faces ‘Enormous Financial Burden’ After Cancer Diagnosis

The Philadelphia Phillies have spent the past several years adding young pitching depth from across the baseball world, often taking chances on arms who still have room to develop. One of those pitchers joined the organization in 2024 after already making his way through multiple professional systems.

Gabriel Barbosa was originally signed by the Colorado Rockies as an international free agent in 2018 before moving through the Rockies and New York Yankees organizations. The Phillies selected the right-hander from the Yankees in the minor league phase of the 2024 Rule 5 Draft, giving him another opportunity to continue his professional career.

Barbosa, who is 24 years old, has continued working his way through the Phillies' minor league system, reaching Double-A and eventually making his Triple-A debut earlier this summer. But his baseball career has now been interrupted by a far more serious challenge, as he and his young family confront a cancer diagnosis and the financial strain that comes with it.

Barbosa revealed his diagnosis publicly in an emotional Instagram post in July, explaining how quickly the news forced him to reconsider what mattered most.

"I was diagnosed with colon cancer," Barbosa wrote in an Instagram post . "I never imagined that at 24 years old I would be living something like this. In just a few minutes, I thought about everything: my health, my wife, our son on the way, my mother, my father, my sister, my entire family, my friends, my teammates and all the dreams I still want to achieve."

According to a GoFundMe organized by Rolando Fernandez and published on August 31, Barbosa was diagnosed with Stage 3 colon cancer after becoming ill while pitching at the Double-A level for the Phillies. He is undergoing immunotherapy and is scheduled for surgery in September, the same month that he and his wife, Pamela, are expecting their first child.

The timing makes an already difficult situation even more challenging for the young family. Barbosa's professional baseball journey had taken him from Brazil through the Rockies, Yankees and Phillies, while he also represented Brazil internationally.

The GoFundMe campaign is seeking financial assistance as Barbosa undergoes treatment while preparing to become a father.

"I'm creating this GoFundMe to help Gabriel and Pamela with the enormous financial burden associated with his cancer treatment, immunotherapy, surgery, medical expenses, and the challenges their young family will face in the months ahead," Fernandez wrote on the fundraiser's webpage . "No 24-year-old should have to choose between fighting for his health, preparing for the birth of his first child, and worrying about how to pay for it all."

As of this writing, the effort had raised more than $36,000 with a goal of $50,000.

Barbosa's baseball future understandably takes a back seat to his health, his wife and their son. For now, the Phillies prospect faces the biggest fight of his life, with his family and the baseball community rallying around him as he begins treatment.
