The Michigan Wolverines suffered a disappointing loss to the Indiana Hoosiers on Saturday, despite several chances to put the visitors away. The Wolverines' defense came to play, holding the No. 6-ranked team to 13 points in an overtime loss; instead, their offense and its coordinator may be to blame.
Michigan lost 13-6 after a disappointing overtime battle, and fans and critics are beyond disappointed with the "disgusting" display of football the Wolverines have shown recently.
Barstool founder and notorious Wolverines fan Dave Portnoy immediately took to social media to rip Michigan's offensive coordinator, Jason Beck, saying he felt the team's loss was ultimately on him.
"They're too talented on offense to be this pathetic," Portnoy said via X . "It doesn't matter; I think Bryce Underwood probably gives us the best chance to win, and he was a scapegoat. Bryce Underwood was a scapegoat for Jason Beck.
"Jason Beck is horrific. Jason Beck is the worst offensive play caller, worst offensive coordinator I've ever watched with these eyes. Jason Beck, get him out. If you want to, just make him the water boy. Take the play calling away from Jason Beck; Jason Beck doesn't know what the f*** he's doing. Jason Beck is disgusting."
Portnoy didn't blame the players; instead, he blamed the coaches. Michigan started freshman quarterback Tommy Carr over Bryce Underwood, and the Wolverines struggled in the red zone on Saturday. Facing third-and-1 from the Indiana 1-yard line, Beck called a naked bootleg, and Carr was sacked for a 13-yard loss. The drive was then squandered on a missed field goal by kicker Trey Butkowski. Although the sack and the miss were blown plays by two specific players, the play calling from Beck leading up to those moments is something fans like Portnoy can't comprehend.
"They played hard, Michigan, but what a disgusting, disgusting offense and disgusting, disgusting game to watch. Defense plays their nuts off; defense deserves a win. But Jason Beck, go get a plane ticket to the f***ing moon and let's shoot you there."
During a postgame press conference, head coach Kyle Whittingham shielded Beck from media bullets while taking accountability for the poor play calling.
"Everything falls on my shoulders, so whatever happens in the course of a game is on me," Whittingham said, via Sports Illustrated . "That was not a good football call, no, that was not a good call at that point in time.
"I have the ability to overrule anything in the whole program. And so, like I said, it circles back to me, but it was a very disappointing outcome and a call that I know Jason wishes he had back, because it really was damaging."
Next weekend, Michigan will travel to New Jersey to face the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, hoping to redeem their season.
