Milos Kerkez Delivers for Hungary as Liverpool Role Continues to Grow
For Liverpool, international breaks often come with an understandable degree of anxiety. This one has at least provided a moment to enjoy, with Milos Kerkez delivering a significant milestone for Hungary.
The Liverpool left-back scored the only goal as Hungary defeated Georgia 1-0 at the Puskas Arena, giving Marco Rossi's side a much-needed Nations League victory.
Kerkez struck after 35 minutes, heading Hungary in front following a strong opening from the hosts. Georgia applied pressure afterwards, but Hungary protected their advantage and collected only their second victory in 12 Nations League matches.
Remarkably, this was Kerkez's first senior international goal.
The 22-year-old made his Hungary debut against Germany in September 2022 and has already accumulated 35 appearances. He also became Hungary's youngest player to appear at a European Championship in 60 years when he featured at Euro 2024.
His goal arrived at an important moment. Hungary began their latest Nations League campaign with a 1-0 defeat against Ukraine before drawing 0-0 with Northern Ireland.
Sometimes a defender simply needs to make something happen at the other end of the pitch. Kerkez did exactly that.
Liverpool supporters have become familiar with Kerkez's relentless energy since his arrival from Bournemouth in the summer of 2025.
He made 48 appearances and scored twice during his first campaign at Anfield. Following Andy Robertson's departure, Kerkez has emerged as Liverpool's first-choice left-back under Andoni Iraola.
There is an obvious familiarity between player and coach. Iraola previously worked with Kerkez at Bournemouth, where the Hungarian developed into one of the Premier League's most exciting attacking full-backs and earned selection in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year.
That relationship could prove particularly useful at Liverpool. Iraola knows where Kerkez excels, understands his aggressive approach and, perhaps most importantly, knows how to channel all that energy within a structured system.
Kerkez's career has already covered plenty of ground.
He progressed through clubs in Serbia and Austria before making his senior breakthrough with ETO FC Győr at 16. AC Milan subsequently signed him after Paolo Maldini personally contacted him, although regular first-team football eventually arrived with AZ Alkmaar.
Now Kerkez is establishing himself for club and country. His first Hungary goal represents another landmark in a career which continues to accelerate.
Liverpool will hope there are plenty more still to come.
