Top performers for Monroe County Region sports on Monday, Aug. 31

German exchange student Livius Guellmeister made an immediate impression on his new friends and teammates at Milan High School by scoring four goals in a 9-1 soccer victory over Airport on Monday, Aug. 31.

"It was a wonderful debut," Milan coach Phil Hayes said. "His plane just arrived on Friday. He had some good bonding with his teammates over the weekend."

Hayes knew Guellmeister was coming, but could not get here until after the Big Reds had played their first five games of the season.

"He's played a lot of soccer," the coach said. "I don't know what level, though."

Guellmeister's level was very high Monday, scoring nearly half of his team's goals.

Robert Gill added a goals and Wyatt Hurd came out of the goal to convert a penalty kick in the season half.

Other goals for the 3-2-1 Big Reds came from Tanner Lambers and Andrew Cruz.

Airport opened the scoring in the opening 30 seconds when Adam Ortega converted a pass from freshman Wyatt Sanders.

"That definitely caught up off guard," Hayes said. "It was a wake-up call. Sometimes you need a wake-up call."

Unfortunately for Airport, the young Jets could not follow up on that wake-up call.

"We only have 11 boys," coach Nick Suarez said. "We graduated 11 seniors form last year's team, which had our best record. It's tough to lose that many.

"This was a 2-1 game through the first 25 minutes. With our lack of depth, we are not an 80-minute team right now. We have some good sixth, seventh and eighth-graders. We knew this year would be rough."

Carson Welker, SMCC : Tallied three goals and an assist to spark a 7-0 win over Flat Rock. Aaron Fowkes, Spencer Schumate and Carson Peters each recorded a goal and assist and Stephen Ban picked up his first varsity goal. Ben Chavous posted the shutout with Aidan Cronin leading the defense.

Nathan Seisdedos-Henninger, New Boston Huron : Led a balanced attack with two goals in 7-0 win over Jefferson-Erie Mason. Matthew Hussey, Gonzalo Aragon and Parker Krause all finished with a goal and an assist. Marcos Reyna and Maverik Bazzy netted the other goals and Marton Krajcz and Dominic Lividini were credited with assists. Todd Elliott recorded the shutout. Jackson Vallie turned aside 32 shots for 1-2 Jefferson-Mason.

Trey Heaton, State Line Christian : Opened his junior season with a hat trick during an 8-0 victory over Pittsford Freedom Christian. Austin Nowak added a pair of goals, JR Hobbins rang up three assists and Steve Callejas notched a shutout in his first start in goal.

Addie Homrich, Erie Mason : Racked up 13 kills in a 25-12, 22-25, 25-14, 25-20 triumph over Summerfield. "The team showed great energy, teamwork, and determination throughout the match," Mason coach Kayle Scott said. "It was a strong start to the season." Aubrey Iocoangeli and Kensey Kreger logged 5 blocks apiece and Kaylee Wright and Zoie Stubleski tallied 15 digs each. Wright also had 15 assists.

Sophia Heissenbuettel, State Line Christian : Went 9 for 9 in serves with 5 aces in the opening set of a 25-7, 25-11, 25-10 victory over Pittsford Freedom Farm. Kylie Huston led the hitters.

Connor Watterworth, Ida : Posted a shutout in a 1-0 victory over Brooklyn Columbia Central. Dane Holycross scored off a Cameron Cohan assist.

Aiden Gray, Monroe : Scored the first goal of a 3-1 loss to Saline. ""It was a brave effort from our boys," Monroe coach Ian Cooke said. "We took the game to them in the first half and had chances to extend the lead." Edwin Sanchez was credited with an assist, Brady Smith was strong in goal and Mauricio Reyes played well for the 1-4-1 Trojans.

Hayden Fausze, Bedford : Racked up 22 kills as the Mules beat Ida, Linden and Madison in pool play before falling in three sets to eventual champion Flat Rock in the Bedford End of Summer Tournament. Blair Russow led the defense with 56 kills and Kenna Goulet and Anna Gray added 18 kills each.Whiteford went 3-1-1 and won the Silver Bracket. Addy Hill had a big day with 69 assists, 30 digs and 12 kills. Jordyn Opatrny, Macy Ovall, Clara Iott, Avery Welch and Brielle White also played well.

Aileen McNamara, Vanessa Neace and Emma Sparks, Flat Rock: All three were part of the first-place kickstart realy and the third-place 200-yard freestyle relay at the Riverview Rockin' Relays. Sydney Clark completed the kickstart relay and Elizabeth Sparks for the fourth member of the 200 relay.

Caleb Healey, Erie Mason : Placed 11th in the End of Summer Classic at Huron Meadows Metropark. Teammates Weston Albright and Porter Ravary ran 14-15. Tanylei Neff led the girls in 30th.
