Red Sox Send Confident Payton Tolle Message Before Orioles Finale

The Boston Red Sox have put themselves in position to finish a dominant weekend in Baltimore. Now they are handing the baseball to one of the most important pitchers in their postseason plans. Boston celebrated Payton Tolle's scheduled start against the Orioles with a simple message Sunday morning.

The enthusiastic announcement captured the anticipation surrounding Tolle's 24th start of the season. It also served as a reminder of how quickly the 23-year-old left-hander has become a major piece of Boston's rotation.

Tolle enters Sunday's series finale with an 8-6 record, a 3.23 ERA and 147 strikeouts over 131 2/3 innings. Opposing hitters have batted just .220 against him, and his average of 10.1 strikeouts per nine innings illustrates the swing-and-miss ability that makes him especially intriguing in October.

His assignment at Camden Yards comes with Boston looking to complete a four-game sweep. The Red Sox won Saturday's game 5-0 behind seven scoreless innings from Sonny Gray. That followed a 1-0 victory Friday, giving Boston consecutive shutouts and three straight wins to begin the series.

A strong performance from Tolle could extend Boston's pitching dominance while moving the Red Sox another step closer to securing a postseason berth.

Payton Tolle Can Strengthen His Postseason Case

Tolle is coming off a less convincing performance against the Seattle Mariners.

The left-hander allowed four earned runs on six hits over 5 2/3 innings Monday. Boston eventually won 9-8 in 10 innings, but the start continued a stretch in which Tolle has occasionally struggled to finish an otherwise effective outing.

Sunday gives him an opportunity to respond against an Orioles lineup that has been held scoreless for 18 consecutive innings.

Baltimore will counter with Kyle Bradish, who enters with a 7-12 record and a 4.01 ERA. Bradish has not earned a victory since July 22 and allowed 12 runs over his final 15 innings entering Sunday.

The pitching matchup appears favorable for Boston, but Tolle's performance could carry significance beyond one afternoon.

The Red Sox have arranged their September rotation in a way that could position Gray and Tolle to start the first two games of a potential Wild Card Series. Nothing has been formally announced, but their recent scheduling creates a clear possibility.

Gray looked ready for that responsibility Saturday. Tolle now gets his chance to offer an answer. Boston selected Tolle with the 50th overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft. He reached the majors barely a year later and has since developed into much more than a promising rookie.

His combination of size, velocity and strikeout production gives Boston a weapon capable of taking over a short postseason series. The remaining question is whether he can consistently deliver deep, efficient starts when the pressure rises. Closing a road sweep would be another meaningful step.
