Chargers’ Jim Harbaugh Admits Major Coaching Regret After Disappointing Cardinals Loss

Jim Harbaugh entered the 2026 season under pressure to finally end the Los Angeles Chargers ' playoff drought. His team's last outing was a wild-card exit against New England in January, and Sunday's opener against Arizona Cardinals was supposed to start a new chapter. Instead, the Chargers fell 26-14 at SoFi Stadium. A day later, Harbaugh pointed the blame somewhere few expected.

Harbaugh met reporters on Monday and steered the conversation back to August. He said he now regrets how little live action his first-team players received before the regular season began.

"We made some preseason-type mistakes. Now I wish we played our starters more in the preseason, to give them game reps," Harbaugh told reporters.

The numbers supported his concern. Los Angeles managed only 268 total yards while Arizona piled up 393. The Cardinals held the ball for more than 37 minutes. The Chargers converted two of eight third downs and went scoreless on three fourth-down attempts.

Justin Herbert completed 17 of 27 passes for 209 yards with one touchdown and one interception, and he was sacked three times. Omarion Hampton scored on an 8-yard run early, then lost a fumble inside Arizona territory in the second quarter.

The fourth quarter sealed it. Simi Fehoko blocked a punt deep in Chargers land, and Brissett found Trey McBride for a 3-yard score two plays later. Andrew Wingard added an interception soon after. LaFleur walked off 1-0 in a building where nobody expected it.

Harbaugh's preseason comment wasn't the only Week 1 decision facing criticism.

Days before kickoff, Harbaugh named Kayode Awosika his starting left guard, closing a competition that had stretched deep into camp.

That group then surrendered three sacks and could not hold a fourth-and-goal snap from the Arizona 3-yard line late in the first half, a series Harbaugh chose over a tying field goal. The line's struggles followed Herbert into his postgame remarks.

"It's on us to be able to execute the protection plan," Justin Herbert said .

The timing stings. Harbaugh spent the summer offering bold public praise for his quarterback, and hiring coordinator Mike McDaniel pushed expectations higher still. By Sunday night, supporters were instead searching for outside explanations for an offense that never clicked.

Los Angeles sits 0-1 after a home defeat few predicted. Arizona moves to 1-0 and hosts Seattle next. The Chargers stay at SoFi Stadium for Week 2, welcoming the Las Vegas Raiders on Sept. 20, with tight end Brock Bowers listed day to day.
