Nebraska vs Illinois Prediction: Bowl Game or Bust?

Both the Huskers and the Illini have five wins, but the loser is in big trouble in the bowl picture. Here's the CFN preview and prediction.

· 578 words

These are testy times for both Illinois and Nebraska. The Illini were supposed to be in for a strong season, but they're scrapping for anything they can get. They might be 5-3, but if they lose this, there's a problem – they'll be the underdog in each of the final three games. Basically, if they want a winning season, they have to beat the Huskers. Meanwhile, Nebraska's season has hit a wall. The 5-0 start was great. The 0-3 run since then, though, has set off an already frustrated fan base desperately waiting for the Huskers to be a powerhouse again. Here's the thing, though: the losses to Indiana, Oregon, and Wisconsin were by a total of 13 points. The Big Red needs more of a tune-up than an overhaul.

Illinois (5-3) won the last meeting 31-24 in 2024, and won four of the last five going back to 2019.

Nebraska (5-3) is in the midst of a nasty run in November, going on the road for three of its last four, with Rutgers next week. Ohio State is the home finale before finishing at Iowa.

The Illini travel to Los Angeles to face UCLA right after this. They come back to host Iowa, and close at Northwestern.

Seriously, all is not lost. This three-game slide is stoppable by doing three key things: stop the turnovers (this actually wasn't a problem until the Washington loss), run better, complete more passes. Essentially, the offense has to be far, far sharper. Scoring more points would be nice, but the offense has to move for that to happen. The Huskers haven't hit 60% of their passes in any of the losses in the three-game losing streak. Illinois allows teams to connect on 66% of their throws. The Illini defense has been hit-or-miss against the run, and it only has six takeaways on the season.

The Illinois defense has found a way to stop teams from scoring points, and Nebraska has a problem putting the biscuit in the basket. Nebraska's attack had a good pace and plenty of movement over the five-game winning streak, and it hasn't scored more than 17 in any of the last three games. But there's a reason for that. Ohio is good, but it's a MAC team. Other than the Bobcats, the other four Nebraska wins came against teams that aren't good at college football, and Indiana, Oregon, and Washington are pretty decent. But for the Illini, it comes down to …

Nebraska vs Illinois Prediction, Betting Lines

Just get one turnover, Illinois. The margin of error for both teams is at a bare minimum, but for the Illini, it's the juice coming off one big takeaway. The team is 5-0 when it generates a turnover, 0-3 when it doesn't. Nebraska will start pushing the attack a little more, which means it'll press, and with it will come at least one important interception.
