Georgia Tech has won an important recruiting battle close to home. Sam Walker has committed to the Yellow Jackets, choosing Georgia Tech over Clemson , Georgia and South Carolina . Clemson had previously positioned itself near the top of Walker's recruitment, while the Gamecocks remained heavily involved and Georgia made a push in recent months.

In the end, the four-star offensive lineman out of Carrollton (Ga.) Central decided to stay home.

"I would definitely say the relationship played a big role in my commitment," Walker told Rivals. "It's there. I can feel it. And then the school piece — it's a very good school. Say football doesn't work out, I still have business and stuff like that I can do. What Georgia Tech is, is for me."

Georgia Tech has been a consistent presence throughout Walker's recruitment. He has visited almost half a dozen times, including a trip earlier this season for the Yellow Jackets' game against Colorado.

But it was what happened away from campus Friday night that helped Walker become certain Georgia Tech was where he wanted to be. Members of the Yellow Jackets' staff made the trip to watch Walker play, reinforcing the relationships that had already put Georgia Tech in a strong position.

"They came to watch me play and I could see the real love. With me, him, Coach Mo, Keith — just all of us. I could just feel the love between all of us. The love we have is real."

Walker had been seriously considering Georgia Tech well before Friday. Seeing the staff show up for him helped close the deal.

"I've been thinking about them for a while, but I think Friday really did it," Walker said. "It just showed how much they make me feel like a priority."

That feeling ultimately helped Georgia Tech beat out a strong group of regional programs. Clemson had been one of Walker's top schools, South Carolina remained involved and Georgia had increased its pursuit in recent months.

Georgia Tech never stopped making Walker feel wanted. Relationships were only part of the equation.

Walker also placed significant value on what a Georgia Tech degree could provide beyond football. The combination of playing close to home and receiving an education from Georgia Tech became increasingly difficult to turn down.

Brent Key also provided Georgia Tech with another significant advantage. Key played offensive line for the Yellow Jackets before eventually returning to lead his alma mater. For Walker, the opportunity to play for a head coach who understands the position and places significant value on the offensive line resonated.

"Coach Tor (Brandon Torrey), Coach Mo (Allen Mogridge), all of them have talked to me about him being an offensive lineman," Walker said. "The offensive linemen that go there are very important to him. I really took that in. That was another reason I chose Tech."

By the end of Friday night, Walker knew. Georgia Tech had already built the relationships. Walker had already spent plenty of time on campus. He knew the academic opportunity, understood the program and had developed trust with the people recruiting him.

The staff showing up to watch him play provided the final push.

"I've always been thinking about them," Walker said. "But Friday, I think Friday really did it. For real, for real. It was a different feeling. I knew."
