The Washington Capitals defeated the New York Rangers on Friday night. It was an intense game between two Metropolitan Division rivals. It's early in the season, but there is certainly no love lost between these teams. In the end, it was one of the newer Capitals, Boone Jenner, who made the difference.

Jenner took advantage of a New York turnover to bury the game-winning goal in the second period. It was his first goal as a member of the Capitals, as well. Washington finished out a tough 3-1 win on home ice thanks to that goal.

"Doesn't matter what time of year, obviously when they're in the division, they're a little bit bigger," Jenner said after the game , via NHL.com. "But at the end of the day you need to collect points, and I think it was a gutsy way to close out that game and make sure we got them."

Jenner is in the midst of his first season with the Capitals . He signed with Washington as a free agent over the summer. Prior to that, he spent his entire career with the Columbus Blue Jackets. Jenner spent the last five seasons as the captain of the Blue Jackets.

The Rangers lost a big piece of their puzzle in this game. Igor Shesterkin left the contest in the second period with a lower-body injury. He had to be helped off the ice and was unable to put weight on his leg. The Rangers had no update on his condition after the game.

The Capitals have now won two games in a row. Washington will look to make it three in a row on Sunday when they take on the Seattle Kraken.
