Red Bull Racing announced Thursday that Max Verstappen has signed an extension through the 2030 Formula One season.

"I am really pleased with the contract extension," the four-time F1 champion said . "We have the best people and I'm excited to keep working together with everyone to get back to the top again. This remains the ultimate goal that all of us have been working towards and will continue to pursue. I want to thank Red Bull, (team principal Laurent Mekies) and everyone at Oracle Red Bull Racing for the trust they put in me."

Verstappen was runner-up to Lando Norris in the 2025 drivers' standings. He had a sluggish start to the year and mounted a comeback attempt in the second half.

Back in March, the 28-year-old suggested he could walk away from Formula One altogether at the end of the current season.

Verstappen's performance on the track added some more uncertainty , with Mercedes having been linked with a blockbuster move in the past. More recently, McLaren emerged as a possible option .

Alas, Verstappen continues to believe in Red Bull's direction, and this is a significant show of faith in Mekies, who replaced Christian Horner as team principal last July.

Verstappen sits sixth in the standings and has yet to notch a victory. At the very least, any title challenge is likely out of the question, and remaining in sixth would be his worst finish since 2017.

The Dutchman's new contract ties him to Red Bull for the remainder of the decade. In theory, that should provide further doubt as to his status for the foreseeable future.

Should Verstappen's malaise extend into 2027 and beyond, the same concerns could once again emerge.
