The New Orleans Saints could receive a major boost to their offensive line ahead of Sunday's Week 9 matchup against the Cleveland Browns . Rookie left tackle Kelvin Banks Jr. is nearing his return after missing several games with a serious ankle injury, New Orleans plans to activate him from injured reserve.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported on Saturday that New Orleans plans to activate Banks from injured reserve. The 2025 first-round pick suffered a high ankle sprain during the Saints' Week 2 game against the Baltimore Ravens and required surgery. His recovery has progressed faster than initially expected.

Banks was placed on injured reserve on September 23 but recently returned to practice . He participated in limited sessions throughout the week and was listed as questionable on the team's final injury report. Although his planned activation is encouraging, his availability for Sunday's game has yet to be confirmed.

The Saints drafted Banks ninth overall in 2025, and he started all 17 games as a rookie. His return could strengthen an offensive line that has struggled to protect quarterback Tyler Shough and consistently open running lanes. Having their starting left tackle back would give the offense more stability.

New Orleans could also use Banks with fellow offensive tackle Asim Richards dealing with a thumb injury. Richards remains questionable for Sunday's matchup against Cleveland. His potential absence makes Banks' return even more important for the Saints.

At 2-5, New Orleans needs to build momentum to stay competitive in the NFC South. Getting Banks back would provide a timely boost as the team looks to improve its offensive production. However, the Saints must still prepare for a challenging matchup against a Browns defense capable of putting pressure on Shough.
