Mike Vrabel involving himself in Patriots’ star contract negotiations

The New England Patriots are still trying to find a resolution to Christian Gonzalez's contract situation before the NFL season begins, and head coach Mike Vrabel is making it clear that he wants to help get a deal done.

However, Vrabel also understands that there is a line he cannot cross when it comes to negotiations between the Patriots and their star cornerback. With the regular season opener against the Seattle Seahawks just days away, the situation has become increasingly important for New England.

Vrabel was asked Saturday whether he would give his input to the Patriots' front office or "go to bat" for Gonzalez during the contract negotiations.

The Patriots head coach acknowledged that he has been on both sides of these situations and wants to communicate with players the organization views as important to its future.

"I don't get involved in the negotiations, per se, but I certainly want to be involved in trying to get the situation resolved," Vrabel said .

That distinction is important. Vrabel isn't negotiating Gonzalez's contract himself, but he clearly wants to play a role in making sure the relationship between the player and organization remains strong.

Vrabel has also repeatedly emphasized how much he values Gonzalez as a player and how important he is to the Patriots.

Christian Gonzalez contract remains unresolved

Gonzalez's contract situation has lingered throughout the offseason and preseason, and there is still no agreement with Week 1 approaching.

The 24-year-old cornerback is under contract, but he has not committed to playing in the Patriots' season opener against Seattle without a new extension. Gonzalez has described the situation as frustrating, while also remaining relatively tight-lipped about what he intends to do.

The Patriots reportedly have made an offer that would make Gonzalez the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history, but the two sides have yet to reach an agreement. Seattle's Devon Witherspoon recently reset the market with a four-year, $132 million extension, adding another important benchmark to the negotiations.

This is becoming more than just a contract story for New England.

The Patriots are preparing for a Super Bowl rematch against the Seahawks, and losing Gonzalez would be a significant blow to a defense that will have to deal with Seattle's explosive passing attack.

Vrabel has said he expects healthy players under contract to practice and play, but he also acknowledged that he has to prepare for every possible scenario.

For now, Vrabel is trying to stay focused on football while doing whatever he can to help resolve the Gonzalez situation. With the opener rapidly approaching, however, the pressure on the Patriots to get their star cornerback's future settled is only increasing.
