Woodward tallies hat trick to power D-Y field hockey to opening win
Recapping Friday's Cape Cod and Islands high school sports action.
Dennis-Yarmouth (1-0-0) began its state title defense with a 6-1 victory in a non-league matchup with Scituate.
Leah Woodward, who was exceptional at handling the ball, tallied three goals and one assist. Aurora Quenneville added two goals, while Sammie Precourt recorded one goal. Jenna Richard anchored the defensive effort and had two assists. Avery Post had one assist.
Nauset 2, Barnstable 1: It was a dramatic finish as the Warriors (2-0-0) scored with three minutes left in the game to break a one-all tie. All three goals were scored following halftime.
Emma Steenstra scored the only goal for the Redhawks (1-1-0) on an assist from Cate Buckler. Avery Croteau was strong defensively and had many defensive saves. Izzy Hill played well in goal and made eight saves.
Sandwich 2, Duxbury 0: The Blue Knights (2-0-0) secured an early season signature victory in a non-league matchup with the Dragons. Elisabeth Stutzman and Audrey Anderson each scored a goal on assists provided by Sadie Clarkin.
Falmouth Academy 1, Cape Tech 0: The Mariners (1-0-0) slipped by the Crusaders (0-2-1).
Cape Tech 3, Falmouth Academy 1: The Crusaders (1-0-1) are off the mark in the new campaign after a win at the Mariners (0-1-0).
Davey Soule, who is a freshman, scored his first goal as a high school soccer player in the second half. Dominic Zuluaga and Noah Leveque provided solid play in the midfield, while Dylan Joyce made 12 saves in goal.
Marshfield 3, Dennis-Yarmouth 0: Giulianna DeSouza led the Dolphins (0-1) with seven kills, while Maya Turek and Emily Orman (four digs) added four kills each. Alyssa Magee made eight assists and had two aces. Aaylah Gomes recorded five digs and one assist in her varsity debut as an eighth grader.
Calvary Chapel Academy 3, Sturgis West 0: The Navigators (0-1) were swept on the road to open up the season.
Barnstable 3, Duxbury 0: The Redhawks (3-0) secured their third straight sweep to start the regular season.
