Commanders’ safety Tyler Owens is the first ‘Angry Runs’ winner of 2026

Washington Commanders safety Tyler Owens made himself a household name during Sunday's season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles . The 6-foot-2, 213-pound third-year safety went viral for a special-teams rep, plowing through two Eagles on his way downfield and bodyslamming Philadelphia's punt returner.

NFL legends and others have praised the play, saying coaches at all levels should use the play as teaching tape. Not only technique, but hustle, too.

On Tuesday, in the 2026 debut of "Angry Runs," Kyle Brandt of "Good Morning Football" picked Owens as the winner, becoming only the third defensive player in the award's history and the first on special teams to win a scepter.

In picking Owens, Brandt called it the "greatest thing" he's ever seen on "Angry Runs." He called it the greatest thing he's ever seen in life and football. "Unbelievable," he said.

After Brandt named Owens the winner, he joined "Good Morning Football." Owens said he was actually angry on the play.

"Angry Runs" began back in 2017, and Ravens running back Derrick Henry has won the most scepters. Owens is only the second Washington player to win the award, joining Austin Ekeler , who won in 2024.
