Klay Thompson Admits He Still Thinks About Returning To Warriors
Heat star Klay Thompson says he's not against reuniting with Stephen Curry.
Not too long ago, Klay Thompson was enjoying historic prosperity on the Golden State Warriors . Alongside Stephen Curry , Draymond Green , and (for some years) Kevin Durant , he helped usher in an era of dominance for the franchise that no basketball fan will soon forget. Now that it's over, however, we can only look back and reflect on what was.
For Klay, who is on the Miami Heat now, so much has changed in a relatively short time. Yesterday, against his former team, he was reminded of that fact, and his response tells us a lot about how he thinks of his time there. According to Klay, he still thinks about his Warriors run and potentially going back there, where it all began.
"A little bit," said Klay after the game . "And I'm so grateful for the support I have in the region. I mean, just going to breakfast this morning and seeing familiar faces. It was awesome. And I'm very, very grateful for the fandom. It really inspires me to keep going."
Of course, Thompson has been out of San Francisco for years now, but it's always a weird experience facing Steph. They once won championships together, and now Klay gets assigned to guard him, just like the opponents they used to beat. Unfortunately for the NBA veteran, Curry got the better of him last night, with a final stat line of 29 points, one rebound, four assists, and one steal on 47.4% shooting from the field.
"It was fun. It was really fun," Thompson said on the matchup with Curry . "Steph's super crafty still to this day, and felt good to block his shot. He made a great up-and-under on me. He had an incredible night, and you know what Steph's doing. I mean, I might not have appreciated it as much as his teammate, 'cause I got to see it every night, so it became normal. But to see it as an opponent, it's incredible. Especially that he's nearing 40 and he moves like a young man, like a young athlete. It's just all the respect in the world for him. He deserves all the accolades, the adulation, the money, and he's just one of one, and the game's going to miss him when he does hang it up."
Klay left the Dubs to pursue a championship on his own terms , but it hasn't panned out as he hoped. After a failed stint with the Dallas Mavericks , he signed with the Heat this summer, only for them to start 3-6. Meanwhile, the Warriors are moving in a positive direction after securing six straight wins . Even Thompson has no choice but to acknowledge their talent.
"The Dubs are very good," Thompson added . "I mean, they have a system in place that has been successful since Steve became the head coach, and never count out the Dubs, especially with Steph and Draymond out there. I mean, Jimmy coming back, Moses coming back. So, strength in numbers has always been their mantra. And I think they'll be a force in the West."
At 36, it's not too late for Klay Thompson to reunite with his former team. With a $5.8 million player option next summer, he could opt out and become a free agent in 2027, setting a clear pathway for him to re-join Steph and Draymond. Plus, with Yaxel Lendeborg and Jimmy Butler , there would be a real chance to make another title run.
Until then, the best Klay can do is reflect on the past and celebrate what he was able to accomplish. As a four-time champion, five-time All-Star, and two-time All-NBA player, his legacy has already been set as an all-time great, and nothing he does going forward will top the heights he reached during his prime.
