The Detroit Red Wings' experiment of moving Emmitt Finnie to center seems to be paying off but it won't matter if the team can't play an effective overall game with more consistency.
Finnie's line, which includes rookie Michael Brandsegg-Nygard and Alex DeBrincat produced four goals. However, that wasn't enough as the Devils pulled out a 5-4 overtime win on a Jack Hughes game-winner.
DeBrincat scored twice, and Finnie and Brandsegg-Ngyard scored once for the Red Wings. Each of them was plus-4. DeBrincat's second goal tied the game 4-4 early in the third period.
Andrew Copp was minus-3 in the first 40 minutes of the game.

The Red Wings went with 11 forwards and seven defensemen again in this game. Nate Danielson was the scratch up front. . . Defenseman Andreas Englund posted five hits for the Red Wings in the first two periods… Anton Johansson drew an assist on Finnie's goal for his first NHL point. . . . Brandsegg-Nygard posted six hits in the game.
The Devils erased a 2-1 Detroit lead with three second period goals (by former Red Wings player Anthony Mantha, plus Nico Hischier and Jesper Bratt.)
Detroit goalie John Gibson has given up 10 goals in his past two starts for the Red Wings.
The Red Wings are home again Thursday (7:30 p.m.) when they play the Philadelphia Flyers. Coach Rick Tocchet's Flyers team is 0-5-2 and has been outscored 28-8.
